This is cross-posted to the other
blog. I saw Watchmen over the weekend, and got to the last level of Bionic Commando Rearmed, and...
So I haven't kept up my goal of posting at least every other day, because I got distracted by things (mainly video games). I did see Watchmen and I'm totally unsure of how I felt about it. On the one hand it was fairly faithful to the graphic novel and the acting ranged from decent to outstanding. On the other hand however, the writing that wasn't Alan Moore's ranged from adequate to awful, the music choices were clumsy (good music, terrible places to put them) and the sex scene was probably the most embarrassing thing I've seen. It was just hilarious, when it wasn't supposed to be. I admit, a good bit of why I wasn't happy with the movie was because things were changed, and damn it it's not like the graphic novel, and all that. Part of it though, was that a lot of it didn't work within the framework of a movie. The flashbacks, while interesting, didn't really fit since the movie moves at such a quick clip. They bogged down the action, which in a comic is fine, because you can read as fast as you want, and when something that makes you want to know about a flashback, or re-read it for perspective, you can just flip back. A movie doesn't let you do that. They also made Nite Owl so much more of a hero, which, yay heroes and all that, but then, it loses something when he doesn't agree with The Plan. The point was, was that everyone but Rorsach agrees, and that is sort of the tragedy. I don't know, maybe I need to watch it again, but I was not really impressed.
In other news, I'm at the last level of the remake of Bionic Commando. And it's this part that's convinced me that Grin does not know what makes Bionic Commando fun. The level is everything that isn't Bionic Commando. It has random disappearing platforms, columns that crush you, and gas leaks that you have to wait to dissipate. What it's lacking is swinging. All the hazards are things that would work and be fun in a game with jumping. But when all you can really do is run, since there's no reason to swing, it's just dreadfully dull and tedious. Granted, I've only tried one and a half times, but man is it boring. On the other hand, it made me pick up Valkyria Chronicles again, so it's not a complete loss.
