And with more energy than he actually had

He did not..
really hand over his whole wallet to the woman behind the counter and walk away to look at a hat, finding everything to be sound.
really stand on that street corner for an hour and look up at the windows in that building thinking of the blisters on his feet, occasionally possibly falling asleep.
cook a meal fit for five at 2 in the morning only to find himself to not be hungry and go to bed.
yell at a peddler.
steal sand from the beach to fill the door jam that he made in the sewing room next to his office at work.
ignore everything his boss said all day.
ignore a crazy man laying on a train platform yelling "oh god! oh god! AH the pain, oh god!" at 3:36am on a Monday morning.
turn off the furnace because he does not feel like paying for gas.
for the fourth time in a row throw out all of the tomatoes because they had grown mold from being left for so long.
fall asleep in a chair in a furniture store on a Saturday evening.
test the ice on lake Michigan to see if it could hold bodily wait.
stand in a athletic store for what seemed like hours staring at the baseball bats.
walk a mile in the snow to ride the brown line north just to feel some sense of familiarity and comfort.

He did wake up every morning at 4:44 and think today he would work it all out, just right.
Better than ever, by himself.
