New York: Day 8

Dec 08, 2008 22:45

Today was my day out on the town.

I went to St. Patrick's Cathedral for Mass at 1 for the Immaculate Conception Holy Day. Lit a candle, too. I've been doing that a lot lately, especially because there's a Church right across the street from my sublet. Well, I don't technically light the candles there -- they're electronic, so I just turn them on. It's not the same, ROFL!

From St. Patrick's, I set out in search of a hat and scarf because it was so cold and I planned to be walking around a lot today. As I walked out the side door of St. Patrick's, I was face to face with the side entrance to Saks Fifth Avenue. So, I went in, thinking I'd find warm things. Well, I found them, at about $150 a pop. So I nixed that idea, but then got curious about "New York Fashion." Sportcoats around $1500-$3000. Crazy shirts for $200-$300. But then, there it was. Unassuming. Simple. A gray hoodie. I touched it. Cashmere. I unzipped it. Rabbit fur lined. No price tag. If I had money coming out my ears, I would have it. But at least I have the memory -- the warm, fuzzy memory.

Banana Republic didn't have any hats/scarves that I wanted to buy. Nice, but $50 is WAY too much considering how frequently I lose them. I ended up dropping about $20 for a hat and scarf at H&M and was quite comfy the rest of the day.

Well, I stayed as warm as possible while walking around Bryant Park in sub-freezing temperatures. Though I did do some successful Christmas shopping, the most impressive find was the frozen fountain. It was still running, despite the temperature.

I went to Macy's, but didn't find much. Had dinner there, then went down to some boutiques in Chelsea. Becca called and said she was off work, so we made plans to meet up for drinks. I was glad she called -- my next stop would have been more outdoor shopping at Union Square, but I had had enough shopping in the cold for one day.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try to crash Opera in the Heights' audition. They never got back to me, even though I emailed them twice, and I really would like to sing for them -- they perform only a few blocks from Fred's brother in Houston.

I'll be home in less than 72 hours. Though I had a fun day today, I'm more than ready to be home.
