The women's showers of the military compound were all together in a steamy, tiled room, and were, at the late hour, completely empty. The base was silent past midnight; she had come in and turned on the lights and water not long after the passing of the hour, unable to sleep. She...itched, was the best word she could think of to describe the hot, crawling, prickling sensation running all over her body. The feeling had driver her frustration until she'd finally gotten up and come down the silent hall to the showers.

The water helped somewhat, and she sat on one of the provided stools, letting her hair flow in the cascade of water. Absently, she ran her left hand over her right arm, slowly tracing the familiar scars there. Even something like that, feeling something she knew instead of all the new sensations around her, was comforting as a few remaining tingles ran across her skin, making her grit her teeth briefly.

Caught up in trying to ignore her prickling skin and uneasy mind, she didn't notice anything changing in the room around her until the door to the room closed, echoing over the sounds of the water. Her head snapped up, an arm going up to cover her breasts as she peered through her wet hair at the newcomer.

“Ah, Kie!” Colenis was smiling at her, and she managed a smile in return. “What're you doing up so late?”

“I couldn't sleep,” she admitted, reaching up to brush away some hair from her eyes. “Are we not allowed up after a certain time?”

“No, you're fine. I couldn't really sleep either, to be honest. Can I join you?”

“Sure...” She turned back to the shower as Colenis started to undress, her arm still hovering over her chest uncertainly. “What kept you up?”

“Mm...” Colenis's bare feet were nearly silent on the tile floor, then splashed through the water until she sat down at the next showerhead. “Just thinking too much, I suppose. I wish there was a bath here... How about you?”

“I was...” She drew a deep breath as the sensation returned, sweeping over her body with that maddening pins and needles feeling. “Just had this odd feeling keeping me up.”

“Maybe a healer could help? Siafire is the best around here if you need her...”

She chanced a glance over at Colenis, feeling her face heat up from something other than the prickling and hot water. The other girl was lifting her hair, straighter now with the water running through it, and her body was exposed. Surprisingly pale skin nearly glowed in the low light, with only one or two small scars to show for training. Her eyes flickered over Colenis's breasts, her heart pounding a bit more as she mentally compared them to her relatively small chest... then she heard the suggestion, and shook her head quickly.

“I think this is just one of those weird things...you know, something that comes and goes without warning.” Slipping her head back under the water, she tried to calm herself. “Um... What were you thinking about that kept you up?”

Colenis hummed briefly, clearly thinking of an answer. “About you, actually.”

Once again, the water did nothing to hide her blush, though she did stammer and splutter briefly. “M-me?”

“That sounded a little weird, huh?” Colenis laughed, and she giggled nervously. “I was just thinking it must be weird, having all these new things happen to you all at once. It was strange enough for me, and I knew I'd be here for months before we came.”

“It is weird,” she admitted, picking up the soap again and returning to slowly washing her legs. “I didn't know a place like this could exist, or that I'd ever see so many different people. I've never really seen much away from my village.”

“In the Northern Reaches, right?” She head Colenis's seat moving on the tile and glanced over to see the girl turning to face the door, hair pulled over one shoulder. “Can you wash my back? I can never reach...”

Kieri went scrambling for the soap and bath sponge, moving her own chair closer. “Sure...” When there was enough lather to almost completely cover her hands, she reached out, starting to gently wash the pale skin.

“Tell me more about your home? I've never really left Desora, so I don't know what it's like...”

Kieri's eyes flicked from Colenis's skin to her own hands, comparing her darker, tanned skin to the other girl's. “It's a small place,” she started slowly, continuing to gently scrub. “It's on the cliffs near the ocean, almost built into them, really. Most of the people there are Somenre like me, but they use their spirits mostly for farming or fishing.”

“Not you, though?” Colenis's voice was soft, as if she were dozing off right there.

“I always wanted to fight,” she said, wringing out the sponge and letting water wash the remaining suds from Colenis's back. “Never really wanted to farm or fish or get married, and most of the defenders stay unmarried, like my sister.” She brushed a hand over her friend's back once more, admiring the soft, smooth skin under the pretext of getting rid of the last few soap suds.

“I can wash yours, if you want?” The black hair fell back down; Colenis turned around, and Kieri nodded, turning to face the other way. A moment later, the sponge started on her back, and her friend's other hand was on her shoulder - the one with the scars. There was a small pause. “... So you have a sister?”

She nodded, hoping the slight relaxation of her shoulders wasn't obvious. “An older sister, yes. “An older sister, the one who trained me.”

“She's a Somenre too?” Colenis's soft hands were carefully spreading the soap over he rback, relaxing her further as long-held tension slowly drained from her.

“No, she's a Miyana, one of the best in the Northern Reaches,” she said quickly. “Like I told Siafire, I'm sure she could help out her. You'd like her, I'm sure.”

There was a soft laugh from behind her, and Colenis said, “I hope we'd get along. She seems very important to you.”

Kieri nodded as water sprayed over her back, washing away the soap. “She is. But what about your family?”

“Oh... I didn't tell you?” She looked over her shoulder anxiously. “It must have slipped my mind. Einhaender and Aylien are my mother and father.”

She barely stifled a sound of surprise. “You mean... Sunglasses Man is your...” She cut herself off, but the nickname was already out, and Colenis looked to be on the verge of either anger or laughter...

A few minutes later, it was clearly laughter; Colenis's face was turning red from trying to hold it back. “Sunglasses...! I'll have to tell him... Mama always teases him for wearing them everywhere...” Then the other girl was laughing, the sound echoing off the tile walls and ceiling.

“Ah...so yes... Sunglasses Man is my father. He and Mama are part of the group organizing the military part of this campaign.”

“And you came with them? I mean...isn't it...” She stopper herself again; obviously, Colenis was there despite the danger.

“I'm part of a little experiment,” Colenis said slowly. “I probably won't fight at all, unless my ability turns out to be incredibly useful. But it's more interesting here than back in the capital, so I don't mind.”

“I see,” she murmured as something hit her. She's a human without a last name...

Behind her, Colenis yawned, and she stretched, feeling the water running over her clean skin. “I suppose I should try to get some sleep. Training tomorrow,” the girl said, and she nodded, starting to rinse one last time. “...but...are you sure you're okay here?”

“Eh?” She turned her head; Colenis was standing, running a hand through long wet hair.

“You mentioned your sister, and it sounds like you miss her a lot... I'm sure Mama and Papa would let you go, maybe send someone with you if you wanted to go home...”

She was blinking in amazement at Colenis, trying to come up with an answer. “I-I'm fine here,” she started, “but...why do you... I mean, why would you worry about me?”

A relieved smile was on Colenis's face, and she watched in utter confusion as the girl turned away, going for a towel. “Because we're friends, of course. Right?”

It took her a moment, but she finally managed a wide smile, nodding,” Right!”

When Colenis was gone, and she was alone with the sound of the showers, she let out a tiny, happy squeak.
