Tears slowly flew down his face like a spitting rain. They weren’t from the beauty of the moon this time, no, they weren’t from anything pointless like that. He hurt, more then ever today, because he remembered him. His father. Memories came and lashed him straight across the face leaving deep imprints on his mind and heart. This feeling, he didn’t like it at all. The feeling of being left alone, forgotten and lost, and to be never found again. It made Dong Hae feel like his heart was breaking. But it always seemed to find him, haunt him in dreams and reality to the point where sometimes he would forget the meaning of happiness.
The feeling had come to him unexpectedly while watching a child split a Popsicle with his father on a hot, humid day. Seeing arguments between father and son, and watching something simple, like a toddler tugging on her father’s hand through a park, reminded him of what he used to have, and when the memories of his Dad came back all he wanted to do was sit in his room and drown in his tears, crying until there was no liquid in his body left. He knew that was impossible with a busy, over-booked schedule such as his though. He only had a select amount of time alone. After only a few minutes of alone time in his room he knew eventually the other members would start getting worried and wouldn’t be able to perform without him.
Even now, Dong Hae knew the other members were worried about him, even if it didn’t seem that way. Most of the members just left him alone for a while to give Dong Hae some space and waited until he was ready to talk to them rather then forcing words out of him. Little did they know all Dong Hae wanted was to be held and be told that everything was going to be alright, just as if he were still a child.
A child, that still had his father.
A loud banging sound disrupted Dong Hae’s thoughts and made him jump awkwardly. He tried to ignore the sound, tried to block it out of his mind, until by the fifth time the sound rang through his ears he realized it was someone knocking on the door. Although he couldn’t find his voice to allow the person to enter, the only thing that really escaped his mouth was a loud choking sob which embarrassed him quite a bit.
There was a slight pause, as if the person was contemplating whether to go in the room or not. Then Dong Hae watched as the knob on the wooden door slowly turned to the side and a concerned Eun Hyuk shuffled through the door way. Closing the door tightly behind him, it made a loud click as it shut.
Dong Hae’s heart raced as he looked up at Eun Hyuk, but after a split second he looked back to the floor. He hadn’t wanted Eun Hyuk of all people to see him like this, not at all. He cared a lot for Eun Hyuk and having him see him helpless and weak made Dong Hae feel uncomfortable in a way.
“Dong Hae? Are you hungry at all?” Eun Hyuk whispered as he neared Dong Hae, who was perched stiffly on the side of his bed. The members had just had a big lunch because many of them had no time for breakfast that morning due to the early activities some of them had.
Dong Hae managed to shake his head from side to side even though he really did need something in his stomach. The tears were still just as impossible to stop as a river with a fast flowing current, and he didn’t want to face the members looking the way he did.
“It’s not healthy to skip meals, you know that. In fact, you tell the members to stay healthy almost ever day, because you care about us...” Eun Hyuk said with a little more confidence. Dong Hae kept silent, which made Eun Hyuk a little nervous, but he continued.
“I also care about you Dong Hae. I want you to be the healthy and happy Dong Hae that I know.” Eun Hyuk confessed to the wall in front of him, then glanced at Dong Hae’s side who was still not looking at him.
Truthfully, skipping meals wasn’t all Eun Hyuk was talking about, and Dong Hae knew that he was implying much more.
Eun Hyuk perched himself beside Dong Hae, sinking into the mattress in the process, and sat there playing with his own fingers in a nervous, uncomfortable way while Dong Hae held his head low in shame and avoided eye contact. Eun Hyuk wasn’t going to leave until he knew that Dong Hae was feeling brighter. So, after only a few minutes Eun Hyuk decided to come from a different approach and instead of verbally talking to him he decided to inch closer to DongHae and put his arm around his muscular shoulders. He had caught Dong Hae off guard, causing him to finally lift his head up and look at his friend’s concerned face.
Eun Hyuk’s brown eyes seemed to glow brightly for Dong Hae, and he began to notice them shimmering in the light that had been pouring through the window in the middle of his room. It made it seem like Eun Hyuk’s eyes were teasing him, tempting him to do the unimaginable.
However, at that moment a tear descended from Eun Hyuk’s left eye, and then another from his right. Dong Hae was confused, wondering what brought the tears to his friend’s eyes and was unsure what to do. So, without any real thinking, Dong Hae shrugged off Eun Hyuk’s arm, turned to face him and held Eun Hyuk’s face with his two hands, slowly wiping the fallen tears with his thumbs, the way Dong Hae always wanted to be comforted. Then, Eun Hyuk, as if reading his mind, did the same for Dong Hae, and for the one small moment they gazed into each other's eyes, Dong Hae had felt warm and happy.
Eun Hyuk, the one that I had always played around and joked with when I was bored, could also give me happiness when I couldn’t find it on my own DongHae thought as a smile appeared on his lips.
When the feelings became too stressed Dong Hae quietly removed Eun Hyuk’s hands from his tear stained face, realizing that he had finally stopped crying and escaped that fearful dark side of himself.
Eun Hyuk scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, with a noticeable pink tint spreading on his cheeks. Dong Hae smiled cutely back at him.
If crying for Dong Hae’s well being was going to make him happier, Eun Hyuk thought, I would’ve done it sooner.
Eventually the feeling, the happy and warm one, escaped the room when yet another person knocked on the door, destroying the moment. But this time Dong Hae could find his voice to allow the person to enter.
“Come in!” Dong Hae said as he looked at Eun Hyuk with a confused expression and a hint of disappointment, wondering who else was awaiting to see him.
A few voices could be heard from outside of the room, and they seemed to be arguing. The two of them couldn’t make out what they were saying when suddenly, the door opened revealing Ryeo Wook, Kyu Hyun, and Sung Min all wearing... apron?.
“Ah, Hyungs! There you are!” Ryeo Wook called brightly as he rushed over to Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae, both sitting quietly on Dong Hae’s bed.
There was a slight silence as Ryeo Wook stood in front of the two until Ryeo Wook began to explain why he had arrived.
“I was wondering if you Hyungs wanted to learn how to make cup cakes with Kyu Hyun, Sung Min and I today? All of the other members are too busy with their schedules, and I had thought I would gather the members that were free for a bit to make the other members a special treat for when they come back!” Ryeo Wook said with an angelic smile.
Eun Hyuk smiled hugely, looking to Dong Hae for an answer first.
Dong Hae smiled back at Ryeo Wook’s irresistible charm. The thought of making cup cakes ran through his head and he decided that it would be a good distraction from the earlier problems today.
“I’ll come.” Dong Hae said with a smile. He thought that if Eun Hyuk was going to go, and he knew Eun Hyuk wouldn’t turn down cup cakes, and felt the need to go as well.
“I could go for some cup cakes, I'm starting to get hungry anyways!” Eun Hyuk confessed, rubbing his stomach to justify his hunger.
“You're always hungry Hyung.” Dong Hae said foolishly with a grin as he across from the comfortable bed. He had already gotten into the hallway with the rest of the members before he realized that someone wasn’t following him. He simply turned around heading back to his room.
“Hyung.” Dong Hae whispered, pulling on the sleeve of Eun Hyuk’s yellow converse sweater until he pulled with enough force that Eun Hyuk was lifted from the bed. The two were left standing in a position in which it looked like Dong Hae was trying to teach Eun Hyuk how to skate for the first time.
“That’s true, I guess you're right.” Eun Hyuk said scratching the back of his head with a laugh. A confused look spread across Dong Hae’s face.
“Right about what?” Dong Hae wondered out loud as he stared at Eun Hyuk who was standing in a trance.
“Now that I think about it, I eat a lot don’t I?” Eun Hyuk said in awe as he stared at Dong Hae’s concerned expression.
Ryeo Wook appeared in the doorway again with Kyu Hyun and Sung Min and asked if they were coming soon. Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae nodded together and while Eun Hyuk was apologizing for taking so long Dong Hae glanced at the other two. Sung Min who was smiling slightly and Kyu Hyun looked not at all amused.
Ryeo Wook must have went full out to get Kyu Hyun to come, by the looks of it. Dong Hae thought pitying Kyu Hyun at that moment.
Ryeo Wook looked extremely satisfied.
“Great! So now we can start baking in the kitchen!” Ryeo Wook replied as he lead the four of them to the enormous kitchen that had completely white cupboards and tiles.
Dong Hae had never understood why Lee Teuk said that he had felt most comfortable in his room and in this kitchen. But now, he had finally realized why.
On the counter tops spread out neatly were what seemed like all of the ingredients and cooking utensils needed to bake the cup cakes, from eggs and icing to bowls and whisks. The four of them walked right up to the counter and immediately looked at Ryeo Wook for further instructions.
Ryeo Wook was surprised at how obedient everyone was being and was very glad everyone was paying attention. He smiled.
“Alright so, there are only two bowls that we currently own so you Hyungs and Kyu Hyun can divide yourself up and work together on the cup cakes.”
Hearing these words Dong Hae immediately claimed Eun Hyuk beside him by squeezing his hand lightly (which didn’t seem to bother Sung Min because he had chosen Kyu Hyun anyways). Eun Hyuk flushed a tiny bit and flashed a smile at Dong Hae, and at that they both walked over, hand in hand, to a bowl to get started.
As the two teams got ready Ryeo Wook grabbed the two cake mix boxes and walked over to each pair. Explaining to each one that the instructions for how to make the cup cakes were on the one side of the box and not the other, how to use the cooking utensils properly. Finally, he let them start. He kept a close eye on them of course, ever since they had entered the kitchen.
When Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae had received the cake mix and instruction from Ryeo Wook they quickly released their locked hands and got to work. Dong Hae grabbed the cake mix and opened the difficultly-glued box, ripping one of the top flaps in the process and snatching the plastic covering of the mix and slowly yanking it upward as if it were a technique.
Dong Hae then gave the slightly damaged cake mix box to Eun Hyuk, whom laughed and shook his head at Dong Hae.
“Who knew that Dong Hae, every ELF's dream guy, can't even open a box.” Eun Hyuk said jokingly as he held the ripped off flap in his hand. Dong Hae glared back at him and turned his attention to the counter top, skimming all of the objects until he found the desired item.
Dong Hae stuck his hand into the flour bag, grabbing just a pinch of the white powder and turned and flicked it right in Eun Hyuk’s face.
Eun Hyuk winced as some of the flour made its way into his eye, and shook his head violently to get the remaining powder off of him. The flour burned his eyes as would sand on a windy day, and he attempted to get the flour out with his fingers.
Dong Hae suddenly felt bad as he watched Eun Hyuk struggling to get the flour off of him and grabbed a nearby cloth siting on the sink a few steps beside him.
“Here.” Dong Hae said with a hint of guilt, but mostly satisfaction as he walked over to Eun Hyuk and brought the cloth over to Eun Hyuk’s right eyelid, trying to wipe off the lingering flour.
That was when Eun Hyuk decided to get his revenge. He opened his left eye just a slit to see what surrounded him and put on an evil smile; he had found something useful. Since Dong Hae was too concentrated on Eun Hyuk’s eye he would never see it coming, but Eun Hyuk would have to do it fast.
There were mere seconds in between the time Eun Hyuk reached to grab the white shelled oval in his one hand and the outcome on Dong Hae’s head. Dong Hae quickly squinted his eyes shut and yanked his hand away, with the cloth, from Eun Hyuk as the yolk and the crushed egg shell began to descend from the top of Dong Hae’s head to the middle of his forehead. At first Dong Hae was frustrated but he couldn’t help but smile.
“How do people see you as shy? I really don’t understand yo-” Dong Hae tried to say teasingly before the egg yolk made it’s way to Dong Hae’s mouth. Dong Hae ran over to the sink by his side and rinsed out his mouth with water, looking at his reflection in the metal. Dong Hae grinned,
I look so ridiculous. he thought as he wiped the rest of the egg off of his face.
Meanwhile, Ryeo Wook was to preoccupied with Kyu Hyun and Sung Min to even realize what was going on with the other two.
“Kyu Hyun, I think your stirring to hard.” Sung Min said cautiously as he backed away from Kyu Hyun and the plastic pink bowl. Kyu Hyun continued though, the rapid stirring, it was faster this way and he hadn’t had any problems with it so far.
“Be careful or else the cake batter will-“ there was a loud thump as the plastic bowl flew across the kitchen and on to the recently swept floor, and then a soft splat as the batter spilt everywhere.
Ryeo Wook’s eyes widened with fear as he rushed over to the upside down plastic bowl. Trying to get as much batter with his hands into the bowl.
Sung Min stood still in shock and Kyu Hyun pulled off an innocent face as Ryeo Wook worried over the mess that Kyu Hyun had made.
Dong Hae and Eun Hyuk also stood in silence from the other side of the kitchen, then hastily attempted to get the egg out of Dong Hae’s hair and the egg that had dropped on the floor. They had to make sure that Ryeo Wook wouldn’t see the mess.
Dong Hae kindly walked up to Ryeo Wook and handed him the cloth he had used (after he had rinsed it off, to help speed up the cleaning process.)
Ryeo Wook sighed.
“Kyu Hyun, Hyung, we can go to the store and buy you new cake mix, and something to clean up this mess.” Ryeo Wook stated calmly as he tossed the cloth in the garbage and looked towards Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae.
“Will you Hyungs be okay to make your batch of cup cakes on your own?” Ryeo Wook asked disappointingly. Dong Hae and Eun Hyuk nodded, and with that Ryeo Wook, Kyu Hyun and Sung Min left to go shopping, leaving Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae alone.
As soon as they heard the front door click they sighed in relief and started an uproar of laughter
“It’s a good thing he didn’t see what you did Hyung.” Dong Hae said with a grin. Eun Hyuk frowned.
“What I did? You started it.” Eun Hyuk said giving Dong Hae a jokingly push, which seemed to be slightly strong as Dong Hae backed up right into the counter and hit the corner of their bowl with his fist, sending the bowl flying right on to Dong Hae’s head.
There was a silence and then Eun Hyuk started to laugh. Seeing Dong Hae with a bowl full of batter on his head was, of course, hilarious. Dong Hae whined.
“Why Hyung...” he said with a pout as he grabbed the collar of Eun Hyuk’s sweater with one hand while taking the plastic bowl off of his head with the other.
Eun Hyuk’s heart began to race as Dong Hae began to pull him closer, until they were just inches apart. Eun Hyuk could feel Dong Hae’s warm breath on his neck, and the feeling was delightful. He had never felt the same attraction as he did now for Dong Hae. Dong Hae leaned into Eun Hyuk and brought his lips to Eun Hyuk’s ear.
“You must be punished.” Dong Hae said unpleasantly as he kept his grip on Eun Hyuk and kissed him so gently on the lips that Eun Hyuk felt dazed. Dong Hae let go of Eun Hyuk’s shirt and and wrapped his arms firmly around Dong Hae’s waist while Eun Hyuk wrapped his arms around Dong Hae’s sweaty neck.
Dong Hae tastes sweet, like sugar and chocolate, Eun Hyuk thought. It must have been from the cake mix, and to him it was pure delight. Dong Hae broke away from the kiss, hands still locked securely around Eun Hyuk’s waist, and he looked deep into Eun Hyuk’s eyes.
“Eun Hyuk, promise me something.” Dong Hae said, his eyes surprisingly now filling with sorrow. Eun Hyuk could see the pain coming back just by looking at him and he nodded.
“Anything.” Eun Hyuk whispered, the same sadness mirroring in his eyes. Dong Hae took a deep breath.
“Promise me you will help clean up this mess. I can’t do it by myself.” Dong Hae said, a grin creeping onto his face. Eun Hyuk looked confused. He was still dazed from his kiss with Dong Hae, but after a moment he smiled. Dong Hae had ruined the moment, but he didn’t care. All he cared about was Dong Hae’s happiness and he seemed to have fulfilled his mission. Eun Hyuk decreased the tiny space in between the two as he embraced Dong Hae.
Eun Hyuk’s fingers playing with his hair and Dong Hae smelt the slightly repulsive scent of Eun Hyuk’s shoulder.
It will take a while for me to get used to that, Dong Hae thought as joy filled his heart.
The two of them broke away when they heard the sound of groceries hit the floor and a few voices. They turned to face the rest of the Super Junior members in horror and embarrassment. Both of them nervously laughed.
“What did you guys do to my kitchen.” Lee Teuk said in horror to Ryeo Wook, who just innocently walked into the room with the groceries in hand. Ryeo Wook turned in the direction that Lee Teuk was facing and saw batter all over the ground, Dong Hae and the counter.
“I can explain.” Ryeo Wook said nervously as he took all of the Super Junior members into the living room and explained how they were going to make cup cakes and how Kyu Hyun stirred too fast and that they went to the grocery store to buy more cake mix and left Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae alone. They all decided that the two, Eun Hyuk and Dong Hae, get to clean the kitchen all by themselves with the new Sham Wow that Ryeo Wook had bought to clean up.
“Hyung.” Dong Hae called as he was wiping down the counter. Eun Hyuk looked up from soaking up the floor.
“Yes?” Eun Hyuk asked curiously.
“Please don’t ever leave me. I don’t know how I would live without you and my father.” Dong Hae said with his head held low as he continued to wipe the counter.
Eun Hyuk dusted himself off and stood up, wrapping his arms around Dong Hae’s waist with his head resting on Dong Hae’s back.
“Never.” Eun Hyuk whispered as he hugged Dong Hae tightly.
