Rating: PG
Word Count: 570
Summary: You're at breaking point, but he’s holding your world together as he holds you.
Notes: Pairing has purposefully been left ambiguous.
For everyone who, like me, has at some point hit rock bottom without a shoulder to cry on or a hand to help them back onto their feet.

Inhale.

City smog is thick in the air but you don’t notice; you’ve lived here all your life and it’s become a part of you, like a bad habit (one of those things that you just get used to, even if you shouldn’t). Lights are cut off by edges of buildings, hiding you in pockets of darkness, but your heart still races at the thought of someone turning the corner and finding you there with him, limp in his arms, far beyond safe distances. Sounds of the city are murmuring in the background and you can almost feel the scratches, blips, and static from your mind’s record player as you try to fill in the silence with some new song.

The night air is warm, tell-tale of the summer that’s been creeping up on you without your notice. The days have blurred together, todays left in the past and tomorrows too close for comfort, as if your life is a calendar that only shows you future worries. And you didn’t used to be the type to fret over such things, but if you could have stopped yourself from changing you would have.

Exhale.

Your breath feels cut short, weighed down by frustrated tears that are so heavy they bring you to your knees. But he doesn’t let go; he clings to you as your lifeline because you’re too tired to cling to him yourself. His lips are on the side of your neck, kissing you softly and whispering the same words over and over: It’s okay, I’m here. I’m right here for you.

You cry; you snuggle further into his arms; you beg him to stay, please don’t leave, please don’t leave you there alone. He’s your only anchor to the world right now, and you’re certain that you would drift off if he stepped away too soon (you’d break the second he let go - wear and tear has worn you down and left you fragile). You're at breaking point, but he’s holding your world together as he holds you. The smog-filled sky, the bustling streets, and the noisy metropolis that’s surrounding you both are all too empty to hold you.

Breathe.

He mutters this to you as you choke and gasp for air, drowning in your own oxygen. He holds you closer and nuzzles your neck until the sobs die down and your trembling subsides, and then leans out to brush his fingers through your muzzled hair. He kisses you on the lips like a seal, shutting out everything you just released from coming back in. It’s okay, I’m here. I’m right here for you. Just breathe.

The two of you only stay there for a few minutes before he helps you to your feet and walks you home. He doesn’t hold your hand (you’ve stepped into the light now, and too many eyes can see you), but he walks beside you so that you bump shoulders, his hand occasionally resting on the small of your back, urging you onward.

When you’re back at home, he takes you in his arms again, guiding you to the couch and pulling you onto his lap, calming you down from any leftover anxiety. You don’t move until signs of dawn emerge from behind window blinds. Time passes slowly, minutes feeling like hours, and you savor every second, closing your eyes and pretending as though you have all the time in the world.

A/N: Oh. Hi. Remember me? :D *waves*
This little ficbit is my way of announcing the near-end of my hiatus! NEAR end. I can't safely say "end" until I gets me a summer job. But school is done for the semester, so the end of that craziness should mean I actually have a life again. Hooray!

Like I said in the notes at the beginning: I've hit some very low and lonely points in life lately, which became "inspiration" for this. I'm feeling much less depressed now, so don't worry!
I have a specific pairing in mind for this, but you can interpret it however you wish.

oneshot, !obaka challenge, arashi for dream, fic
