“So,” Ohno said, stretching the word out to two syllables, “now what?”

Nino just shrugged, leaning in even closer to the older man, elbows jutting into Ohno’s sides. “How am I supposed to know?”

Ohno fell silent again, watching Nino shuffle a deck of cards. They were sitting out on the balcony at Nino’s apartment, watching cars drift by, enveloped by the sounds of the city. They were huddled under a blanket and Nino made hot chocolate, one cup for both of them to share, but the cold air was still nipping at them, making them shiver. Ohno didn’t see how Nino could stand keeping his hands out from under the blanket, practicing magic tricks.

With perfect timing, Nino stuck his hands under the blanket and up Ohno’s shirt, making him yelp and flail his limbs. Nino laughed at him, but didn’t remove his fingers - and once Ohno grew used to the icy chill against his chest and Nino’s hands became a bit warmer, Ohno didn’t protest further.

An hour passed with them sitting there, wrapped up in one another, tickling and nuzzling against each other’s necks. They exhaled and smiled as their white puffs of breath mingled together until it was impossible to tell that it came from two separate people.

A gust of wind reminded them of their surroundings, making them both shiver violently. Nino stood up wordlessly and took the blanket back inside with him, Ohno pouting at the sudden loss of heat and scurrying after him.

Nino kept the cloth around his shoulders as he peered into the fridge and grabbed two beers. “Bring in that mug,” he ordered as he rummaged around the cabinets.

“It’s cold,” Ohno said simply. Nino rolled his eyes and shrugged the blanket onto the floor, kicking it in Ohno’s general direction. Safely wrapped up, Ohno willingly ventured the necessary three steps back onto the veranda to bring the empty mug back inside. He took it to the sink and filled it up halfway with water, swishing it around and observing the water grow darker, black specks floating around from the hot chocolate’s residue. By the time he actually washed it, Nino was waiting with two cups of instant ramen.

They pulled out the kotatsu and played footsies underneath it as they ate. They stared at the door that led out to the balcony in silence, as if they were back outside, trying to find stars amidst the smog, only now without the insistent cold.

Ohno leaned his head atop the kotatsu, spreading his arms out around it. “I don’t think we’re doing this right,” he concluded.

“Probably not,” Nino agreed. Then he chuckled, setting his can of beer on top of Ohno’s head and holding it there, watching Ohno aimlessly swat it away. “But hey, getting drunk would be the ‘right’ way, right?”

“Are we getting drunk?”

Nino shrugged, lifting the can off of Ohno’s head to take a sip. “We could.”

“Shouldn’t we be having sex or something?”

Nino smirked. “We could.”

Ohno picked his head back up and stares at Nino inquisitively. Nino chuckled, pinching Ohno’s nose and glancing back to the door. “We’re pretty bad at this, aren’t we? It shouldn’t be this hard to just spend Valentine’s Day together like normal people.”

Ohno blinked. “What do normal people do on Valentine’s Day?”

“Dunno. Flowers and chocolates? Dinner by candlelight?”

Ohno held up his empty ramen container. “A little late for that.”

“Watch a sappy movie? Or a porno?”

“We could watch the HanaDan movie.”

Nino sent him an incredulous look. “Are you suggesting that as the sappy movie and as the porno?”

Ohno grinned mischievously. Nino took a swig of beer, finishing it off, and threw the empty can at Ohno’s head. “Look, I’ve never been into the whole Valentine’s Day thing, and it was your idea anyway, so you come up with something.”

“It was Aiba’s idea, actually. He-”

“I don’t want to know,” Nino interrupted with a moan.

They fell silent again. The beer can had rolled all the way across the floor and into the wall, so they turned their attention from the balcony door to that. Nino scratched his chin. Ohno picked his nose. Time ticked by.

“Maybe we should just… do what we always do?” Ohno suggested. “I mean, the entire point was to make this a ‘special’ day, but it doesn’t really suit us.”

Nino laughed, crawling around the kotatsu to sit beside him. “No, it doesn’t,” he agreed. “Let’s do Valentine’s Day our own way. No romantic dinner.”

“I like ramen better anyway,” Ohno said with a nod.

“No cards or flowers or chocolates - at least none that come in heart-shaped boxes.”

“They’re all expensive, anyway.” Nino gave Ohno an approving pat on the head.

“No sappy movie or porn and definitely no HanaDan.”

“The TV shall turn on for nothing other than video games or the fishing channel.”

Nino snatched Ohno’s beer from his hand. “The booze we can keep.”

“And the sex?”

“And the sex,” Nino confirmed, wrapping his arm around Ohno’s waist. “So let’s see: ramen, beer, and sex. Sounds like our kind of Valentine’s Day.”

Ohno’s laughter melted into Nino’s kisses.
