i always was a romance junkie

So I just finished Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews and it was FABULOUS. I mean, beyond great, amazing, and just so much fun. It was kinda described as Billionaire Boss and His Secretary, but in space...and she can kill him with her brain. Now, we all know how much I love Harlequin Presents and how much I love sci-fi so this book was right up my alley. Frankly, it fed the needs of both my inner fan girl and fan boy seamlessly at the same time.

It was a Kinsmen series book which means biological implants and familial mutations, that are hoarded and prized, passed through generations equaling badass mafia families as the ruling aristocracies in a technologically advanced setting. One of the things I love about Andrews is the attention to detail and realistic incorporation of various technologies. It's not just random stuff thrown in to look cool. It all makes sense. Eerily awesome sense to the point where i think Andrews should be part of a think tank.

What I love about Rada with the provincial people is that there is hard core, cutthroat(literally) business competitions mixed in with this old world customs and culture native to the planet. I love their customs and culture which is wonderfully explained and interesting. We were introduced to a new planet called Uley which is washed out, bland, and sparse due to a war that's been going on for the better part of 60 years not to mention the aggression and rivalry that spanned back for 300. I love how Claire (our heroine) is so jarred by coming to Rada which is beautiful, colorful, and vibrant with life when compared to Uley which is exactly the opposite. The transition isn't easy but she learns and adapts and her character, like all the characters in the books, has so much depth, complexity, and realistic vulnerabilities that i wouldn't be surprised if she was a real person. It was exciting to watch this story unfold and i really appreciate the fact that the characters don't degrade and keep their intrinsic integrity as they find their way to each other. The character and personality isn't compromised or sacrificed just for the sake of getting the two of the together with a convenient deus ex machina (thanks, Ms. Blanchard for 11th grade vocabulary). The realism of the characters, setting, technological elements, and unfolding events is what really makes this book so much fun and enjoyable. That and the Harlequin element that i ate right up.

It was beautifully written and the humor was so much fun. Andrews builds worlds that i want to live in, cultures and customs that i love, and food that i desperately want to eat. She created (i think) these awesome things called passion cones in the first Kinsmen book. I want one so bad. I even googled it. Nothing really compared, but they seem similar to orejas with raspberry filling and lemon rind and maybe some sugary coating. Not to mention the fact that i've been desperate to find what i think are orejas after i had them at some mixer at Sargent way back when. She always describes these great foods and it always makes me really hungry. And we know how I'm all about food.

I could go on forever about how much I loved this book. I loved this book. Period. You want sci-fi and romance? It's this, right here.
