Some thoughts about Godzilla: Unleashed...

Godzilla: Unleashed is definitely one of the major factors in my desire to get a Nintendo Wii. However, I do have a few qualms about the game. In particular, the original monsters that Pipeworks created for the game.

I don't mind the idea of new monsters, except that they take up space. What I mind is how the addition of the new monsters was handled. First off there was that vote for the new monster. I immediately had a favorite:

All hail "The Visitor!"

"The Visitor" was a kick ass alien monster. He kinda reminded me of a hybrid of Orga and Monster X. He also looks like a monster I would have designed. And of the 4 he looks to me the most like a Toho kaiju and would've translated the best into the video game graphics.

But he came in second. The real winner was:

Boo! Hiss!

"Magmouth" who was officially christened "Obsidius," which is good because "Magmouth" is a really lame name. However, I fail to see how this rather bland monster captured so many voters' imaginations.

But, oh well, I figure. They said there would be two original monsters, so I figured that maybe they'd use the second most popular monster in the vote. Which means I'd actually get to play as--WHAT THE HELL?!

Who the Hell are you?!

Nope, they threw in "Krystalak," who looks like what would happen if you took Blanka from Street Fighter 2, gelled his hair until it was spiky, pinned a tail on him, dyed him silver/white, and stuck a really silly beard on his chin. He looks like he'd be an okay playable monster but damn he looks goofy.

However, the final insult to me came when Obsidius was recently revealed in all his graphics glory.

Maybe "Turdzilla" woulda been a better name...

Yeah, as I kinda expected, he looks like crap in video game graphics. That mouth of lava looks more like an eye and it also looks like it was just painted on. It might've looked cool in the concept art, but it looks awful in the final.

I just don't understand why The Visitor lost to this chump. Now I'll be stuck with him instead of a potentially much cooler monster. Oh, and Krystalak who is at least cooler than Jet Jaguar but still pretty lame.

The rest of the roster looks pretty good though. Hedorah looks to get shafted again, but at least there's the addition of King Caesar, Biollante, and the rather unexpected but suitably awesome:

Titanosaurus!

Oddly, though, while Hedorah looks to have been ignored, you can find Varan's name in the copyright list! C'mon, Pipeworks, Varan is cool, but Hedorah is so much cooler!

Ah, well, at least we get to play Titanosaurus!
