==========
Amber picked up the ball that rolled in front of her. As she lifted her head, she saw a cute little girl running towards her.
The American-Taiwanese smiled at her.
“Yours?” she asked the girl in Korean. The little angel frowned.
“Ball. Mine,” she told Amber, complete with gestures to understand her. The boyish girl laughed.
“I speak English too,” Amber said. The girl beamed as the older one handed the ball to her.
She looked at the girl. Amber tried her best not to pinch her cheeks. This girl is so cute, she thought.
Then she saw the girl was looking behind her back, at the ice cream truck.
“You want some?” the tomboy asked the girl. The little girl nodded then grabbed her hand. They walked towards the ice cream truck and bought two chocolate ice creams.
“But I don’t have money to pay for this,” the child worriedly said.
“Nah. It’s my treat because you are so cute,” she told the girl. “By the way, what’s your name, little princess?”
“My name is Amber and I’m four and a half years old!” the little girl said brightly.
“Oh! We share the same name! Hello, Amber! I’m Amber and I’m 28 and three-quarters,” she introduced herself, laughing.
“Wow! Why is your name Amber, too?” the little girl asked curiously as she ate her ice cream.
“Hmmmmm,” Amber pouted. “I don’t know, actually. How about you? Why did your parents name you Amber?”
“My dad said I was named after his first love,” the girl answered.
“Oh. So your mom’s name is Amber too, huh?” Amber commented.
The two Ambers talked about a lot of stuff: the difficulty to learn Korean, food, ice creams, toys, bikes, school-
“AMBER!”
Both Ambers looked at the shouting lady. The little Amber smiled.
“Mommy! Daddy!”
The older Amber looked at the approaching couple but her eyes were glued at the man who was also staring at her.
“Amber! Where have you been?! We’re so worried!” The woman hugged her daughter. Then she turned to the American girl.
“Thank you for looking after my angel, miss-“ The woman stopped talking when she saw Amber.
“Hey,” Amber greeted quietly. The little Amber dragged her parents in front of the boyish girl.
“Mommy! Daddy! Her name is Amber, too! Cool, right?” she told them excitedly.
“Yes, baby. That’s cool,” her dad said, still looking at Amber.
“This is my mom but her name is not Amber. Her name is Yuri. And this is my dad, his name is Henry,” the little princess introduced.
Amber smiled awkwardly at them. Yuri looked at Henry who has never taken off his eyes on the younger woman.
“And she bought me ice cream! Our favorite flavor, Daddy!” the little Amber told her father. Henry smiled at his daughter.
“I see that you’re a daddy’s girl, Amber,” the boyish lady commented. The four-year-old kid nodded frantically.
Looking at the little girl, Amber realized why she looked familiar. The cheeks she wanted to squeeze looked like the cheeks she used to pinch six years ago whenever she cuddled Henry, this little girl’s dad. She looked at the kid’s almost-done ice cream. Amber chuckled and wanted to tell the kid that chocolate is also her dad’s ex-girlfriend’s favorite ice cream flavor. And that ex-girlfriend happened to be her, the one she shares her name with.
“Did you already say thank you to her?” Henry asked his daughter.
Little Amber went closer to Amber. The older Amber bent down.
“Thank you, big Amber,” she said sweetly.
“You’re welcome, little Amber,” the American-Taiwanese replied. To her surprise, the little kid kissed her cheek. Henry just watched the two Ambers while Yuri observed Henry.
“Can we invite her for dinner?” the girl asked.
“I’m sorry, princess but I am waiting for a friend,” Amber declined. Little Amber pouted.
“Next time, baby. We’ll invite her,” Henry said.
Amber looked at him. His gaze was piercing her. She stood up and stared back at him. How she missed him badly: his face, his voice, his smile, his everything.
Yuri cleared her throat, breaking the two’s staring game. Henry looked at his child and carried her.
“So… it’s nice seeing you again,” Yuri said. Henry didn’t say a word. He just nodded at her then walked away with his little girl, who was waving at the older Amber. Yuri followed them, stealing glances at the androgynous girl.
Amber waved back at the little angel. Then she saw Henry looked back at her. His eyes were really sad and longing. Amber’s tears were threatening to fall so she turned her back on them, walked a little until she saw a bench. She sat and stayed there for a while, still shocked seeing them together.
The boyish girl was about to leave when someone called her. She looked back and saw Yuri running towards her.
“Amber, it was never my intention to hurt you and ruin what you and Henry had before. It was a fixed marriage. The only crime I am guilty of is that I fell in love with him,” Yuri paused. Amber just waited, saying nothing.
“Amber,” Yuri suddenly grabbed her hands. “Thank you for not stopping our wedding. I saw you in the church that day. I was really afraid that you’ll stop it. I am forever grateful.
“All I can do to pay you and Henry for the hurt I’ve caused is to allow Henry to name our daughter after you. It hurts so much, calling my own child of a name that will always remind me of you. Of my husband’s only true love. But I can bear that. I can pretend I didn’t hear him calling your name while he sleeps after six years of marriage, calling you while we make love-“
“Funny because it sounds to me like it’s more of having sex than lovemaking,” Amber interrupted coldly, adding salts to Yuri’s deeply wounded heart.
“I don’t care. As long as I have him. All of these just for Henry to stay by my side.”
Amber was taken aback when Yuri knelt.
“Amber, just a word from you, telling Henry to leave me, to come back to you, to continue what you had before, he will gladly leave me. It’s been six years but he… my husband still loves you. So I beg you. Please, I hope this will be the last time we’ll be seeing you… that he’ll be seeing you. I can’t live without him. Please, Amber. Please,” Yuri was weeping so hard. The other people in the park were already looking at them.
The short-haired girl looked at the kneeling woman and said coldly, “What will you do if I take him back? Threaten me again to kill yourself?”
“Amber, please-“
“How does it feel to beg for the man you love? Now you know how and what I felt when I begged you to just let Henry be; to think of his happiness. But you were selfish.” Amber turned her back on Yuri.
“As you’ve said, you perfectly know that I can take your husband away anytime I want but I won’t do that,” Yuri lifted her head.
Amber continued, “I am not doing you a favor, if that’s what you think. I am doing this because of your daughter. I can never take away her father from that little angel.” Then she left.
==========
Amber spent the whole night crying and repeatedly reading Henry’s last letter to her - the letter he gave the night before his wedding.
Amber,
Please come to the church and stop my wedding. I don’t care if my parents detest me. Just stop the wedding and let’s runaway. You’re the only woman I want to marry.
Please. I love you so much.
Henry
If Amber had stopped his wedding, they wouldn’t have exchanged that sad and longing look. If she had stopped his wedding, it could have been his and her family.
Then Amber remembered what Henry’s daughter told her about her name.
“My dad said I was named after his first love.”
The child was named after Henry’s first love. His daughter was named after her.
When Henry looked at her a while ago when he was carrying his kid, did he just see what Amber saw? A life that could have been theirs? Should have been theirs?
If she had stopped his wedding, that child could have been his and her Amber.

A/N: Yeah. A broken!Henber for Valentine’s Day. I’m just spreading my bitterness. LOL! Anyway, this story was already written during the SNSD comeback performance, hence the HenYul. I know you hate me now for writing a broken!Henber, I’m sorry. I just want to try it. At least I didn’t kill any of them. >_<
By the way, the summary and inspiration of this story came from a song of my ultimate favorite boyband, a1. The title of the song is
“The Life That Could Have Been.” The same group who sang “Perfect Disaster,” the song where I got “TPD’s” title. Please listen to it. I insist.
