Writing an undead paladin's a massive challenge for me. I don't generally write religious characters, let alone ones with the amount of faith being a paladin would entail. I'll admit it makes my main character exceedingly frustrating to write for sometimes, as his belief system runs wildly counter to my own. Sometimes I really struggle with him, and find it easier to focus on my other characters, like the deadpan snarker ex-paladin. There's days when I have to focus on him, or any of the other secondary characters because my main's just not coming to me.
But hey, I wanted the main character of my book to be an undead paladin. I've always liked that little contradiction, and it gives the character a nice, continual source of internal conflict. Resolving what he is and what he's become is going to be a large part of his character for the foreseeable future. I try to keep him from being too outwardly religious though, because I'd rather not have the fantasy equivalent of an obnoxious Bible-thumper on my hands. Also, you know what they say about people who make a big show of their religion, right?
To those who say an undead paladin can't possibly exist, I say the following; shut the fuck up. My make-believe world, my rules. I am God here. If Stephenie Meyer can create sparkly non-vampires, I can have a zombie holy knight. At least my guy isn't a skin-crawlingly creepy, abusive, controlling stalker. He is in fact, kind and noble, possibly more than a little piteous. That's what I intend him to be anyway.
...of course I suspect my productivity will slow to a crawl next week, as I know at least three people are getting me WoW 60-day timecards for my birthday. Fuck's sake, family. Do you want me to finish this book or not?
