Interesting - BBC Worldwide has some official Red Dwarf clips out on YouTube. There aren't that many, but this is one of them. Must be a popular one, then. Personally, I can't wait for someone to put the extended version out there again. :p

Weee, I've now seen 2 minutes of Red Dwarf. I had always thought it was a sci-fi drama, like star trek or babylon 5. The laugh track was sort of a surprise.

LMAO - seriously? Hehehe... no. Well, it does have what Pratchett refers to as 'tragic relief'. Furthermore, Grant/Naylor are true SF fans, and put some really neat ideas in there. I think you would appreciate the dark humor of the earlier series.

Well, I always knew red dwarf as being hardcore nerdy crap, and all of the other things in that vein tend to be dead serious. Never actually ran across it before personally, and people I knew only made obscure references to it so that I never got a good idea of the general plot/

Well, it's not terribly well known in the US. The plot is simple; a mining ship suffers a lethal radiation leak, and the only survivor is the guy who was in stasis for smuggling his pet cat on board (Lister.) The ship's computer (Holly) has to wait 3 million years for it to be safe for Lister to come out again. When he does, his only companions are the hologram of his dead room-mate, whom he absolutely hates (Rimmer), and a creature who evolved from the kittens his pet cat had in the ship's ventilation system. Oh, and an android (Kryten) joins them later on.

The humor can be quite dark and nasty. Some examples:

Lister wakes up and finds everyone has died.

Kryten defends Rimmer in court by explaining what a pathetic loser he is

Rimmer holds a morale meeting.

Lister has a verbal duel with a snarky hologram.
