It has come to my attention that about half my facebook "friends" are people I went to high school with, haven't talked to since, and in many cases, didn't talk to much then. I mostly just accepted their friend invitations on the basis that I remembered their names and wasn't sure how much traffic there would be ( Read more... )

Consider using the Hide control on FB-friends who have spammy status messages?

If you hover over the space to the right of someones status update on your FB homepage, you see a "hide" control for them.

I have ended up doing this to almost all my high school "friends", because it was nice to ping them and all that, but they're all pretty inane online...

Not to mention how incredibly awesome it is to be able to hide all the stupid "How much do you resemble a stick of butter?" quizzes and whatnot.

I say toss'm. If you don't feel the urge to contact them now then chances are you will not in the future.

Plus facebook does not make a big deal of "unfriending" and no one will really be the wiser unless they good looking.

Just group them and hide the ones you don't know very well. I think of it more like a yearbook that talks, heh.

I've done a mix. I unfriended a few people that I said yes to before I realized the deluge I would get. Facebook doesn't alert people you've unfriended them, so I don't think it's worth it to make a big deal of it. I used the more and less controls (can't remember where the heck they are) to say I wanted more updates from certain people and less from others. And I created a group of people I really want to know about, so I could filter the rest out if it was too hairy.
