To understand why the quote that I'm going to post is funny, one must know about the extreme pornography law that was just brought into effect today in England. The law essentially criminalises the possession of "extreme" pornographic images which might include: any kind of S&M that the courts can construe as "extreme", probably needle play and ( Read more... )

I know, right???

I'm sure the shit's going to start hitting the fan perty soon with this one. Can you even imagine being arrested for having porn on your computer? Produced with the involvement of consenting adults? Being persecuted for a victimless crime...

People argue that porn causes people to commit violent crimes... I thought we learned in high school that correlation by no means proves causation, and I have yet to read any empirically evidenced study that comes close to proving that watching porn will turn my boyfriend into a rapist. If anything, I think porn provides an outlet for people who have fantasies that involve violence of some sort. Somebody who becomes a rapist is probably going to do so with or without the availability of pornography.

As for me, the supposed victim of pornography, I don't feel like I'm suffering because men get turned on by watching porn (heck, I enjoy some good smut). The men that I know all treat me with respect, and when it comes to sex I'm never treated poorly; and who says an amount of objectification has to be a bad thing, heck, if my boyfriend didn't appreciate my body it'd kinda be a problem. All in all, porn is not hurting my life or my sex life (of course, people can become addicted to porn, but people can also become addicted to alcohol, or painkillers, or sex, and people aren't trying to ban those [yet]), so I'd really hate to be called a criminal simply for the types of fantasies I enjoy...

Definitely an interesting topic for discussion. It makes me appreciate our constitiution and the fact that our supreme court usually prevents people from passing laws like this in the US.

Yay first amendment!

Well...
the problem always rises due to a few "exceptional" cases. Many of us are disciplined, but some are not. Because of a lack of self-control, a few group of people actually commit crimes because they were stimulated by watching some explicit content.

The prosecutors will likely to argue that "watching violent porn" makes one "violent." The same argument goes with video games. I don't think one can become "violent" by playing "violent games."

Nonetheless, it is just somewhat sad that the rights of some British are being penalized with such a ludicrous law.

Anyway... I love "studying" porn as well, and I don't think I ever objectified anyone in any form of.... "anything." Haha :)
