Fear.
Fear is the sense of dread, or injury, pain and suffering, promised or perceived. It's a dark, primal emotion, one that can eat you alive or save your life. Fear is the thing that Danger hates, because Fear is always one step ahead, scaring off Danger's victims before they can be claimed.
Fear is a twisted emotion. It's one of Paul Ekman's six universal emotions along with Happiness, Sadness, Shock, Disgust and Anger. Fear is something virtually everyone understands in one capacity or another. But given form, what is fear?
I was given an interesting insight by Vinay -- Fear is the dark -- and it's fairly true. Fear is from not knowing. Fear isn't about danger, but perceived danger; Fear is what gets the heart pounding when we think something dangerous is about to appear.
But what does Fear look like? I see Fear as something immersed in decay; a landscape steeped in broken trees and dying grass, with shallow water and a craggy landscape. A dark grey and brown space where the earth itself seems too tired to fight back. Fear is a hollow place, filled with spindly monstrosities, spiders that are thin and sharp, formed by the worries that brought Fear itself alive. And somewhere on fear are the remnants of its resisters. Things like Trust, Reason, Peace of Mind and a wearing down last stand of Hope. Because once Hope is gone and Fear is all consuming, Fear will once again become the Dark.
What do you guys think of fear?
