I completely agree that "Son of Man" should have Samus/Metroid instead of Link/Triforce. The apple obscures the face of Magritte--what is behind the apple is a mystery. The triforce doesn't have any of the same symbolism. We always see Link obtaining the triforce, but the focus is on Link. The triforce is simply the quest. What does the triforce hide?

Samus, however, is obscured by the metroids. The Game isn't called Samus; it's called Metroid. So, even on a very basic level, the metroids obscure Samus. Samus is always obscured, as well--seeing Samus is something that you have to work hard to do. We also have a much better understanding of Link sans triforce than we do of Samus sans metroids. Who is Samus? Her entire history seems intertwined with them, raised by the Chozo, who created the Metroids. Who is Samus without the metroids? The metroids, being easily visible, conceal Samus ( ... )

Woah, talk about a brain fart. I had forgotten that you had listed "Raft of the Medusa" already.

OK, so now that I'm thinking about what to do with Megaman, a couple of ideas have come to me. I really don't like "The Raft of the Medusa" as carrying the villains, as that's a painting about tragedy and hope, not evil. It really changes the theme of the painting.

First idea is to take the Bosch I gave you and use that for Megaman. The crazy villains could be used--there are enough freaky ones that, really, could compare to those demons.

Of course, there are other paintings of Bosch's that could be used. The Seven Deadly sins could be fun, with the megaman villains divided into the seven sins, and megaman as God. That's amusing, but is a bit too pastiche. Same with other ones of Bosch's, like "Last Judgement."

Here's a good one, I think: http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/bosch/judge/judge-r.jpg

No one does villainous like Bosch,

This concept certainly seems to have caught your attention! :P

I do have to agree on the Marilyn Diptych -- Aeris does seem like a more appropriate choice. The only real problem is that she arrives in the 32-bit era, and I've been trying to stay in 8/16. I'm not even sure she has a sprite that can be attributed to her, though I could draw one. The case of the Marilyn Diptych is one where I'd like to take a pre existing portrait and use it instead -- I think it would more accurately follow Warhol's style. Perhaps I'll set this one aside until I can think of a more appropriate use.

You make a good point about the Raft of the Medusa, too. I hadn't really put much thought in to what to do with it yet; it's just the closest to fitting the theme I want to work in with Megaman -- military and dark. Themes of betrayal are always good too. The Bosch painting might be good, though I don't recognize it myself. I'll have to look in to it.

I'm gonna have to flat out veto any use of Earthworm Jim. He's seriously a bit too weird for this project.

Well, if all you want is a pre-existing portrait... if it doesn't absolutely have to be a sprite, you could use this picture of Aeris, which is the one Square & Squaresoft used in all their promotional materials (and in the game): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:200px-Aerith_Gainsborough_art.jpg
