Project Planning

Hey All!
I was planning a nice 'back-from-Ottawa' post, but it was eaten when quicktime ate my browser the other night. So screw you Apple, this doesn't encourage me to join your 'everything just works' world, because I think you're lying to me. Expect a winter-break summary later.

All that aside, classes have started this week and now my brain is reeling! Proposals to hand in for Monday and Tuesday, and I've been spending most of my idle time trying to hammer them out.

First up is 3D Media, more commonly known as Sculpture! I'm looking forwards to this, mostly because it gives me an excuse to spend 16-20 hours a week working on skills I'll later apply to modelling. I have a few ideas right now, but I keep getting drawn back to the idea of planetoids. Doing a series of little planets probably no bigger than two feet across, which would be cartooned slight in their design. (Not unlike Mario Galaxy, I will admit) However, I have a number of concepts to apply to this idea, and I'm not sure what to go with, if any.

For example, doing a series of common objects, (monitor, chair, guitar) as though they were planets and make little cities and the like atop them. I've seen an image of a guitar done like a sky-island which I thought was quite effective, but I'd want the detailing to either be commentary or in some way representive of the object or it's connentations. Moreover, since it'd be a series of objects, I'd want them to relate somehow.

Another thought was to do exploding heads -- err, ok, that can be explained better. The idea is to do planets that look like heads, though their insides would be hollow. Then, inside and around the head would be objects that are again representative or commentary on the head. I could do different people, or perhaps different expressions. The latter is probably the strongest idea so far, but I dunno, I'm still mulling it over.

The next class is the troublesome one. Advanced Studio Practice. There is no central topic or theme. I can do anything, so long as it is good. I'm trying hard to not just come up with two sculpture projects and just doing the second one for this class, so I've intentionally been trying to come up with several different ideas in different mediums.

One idea is to do a project I've had in mind for a while. To draw out an enormous environment, or a series of environments, in pixel scale. And when I say 'environment' I mean something like a planet. The end result (printed at something like 150 or 200 dpi) would be a sizable poster that when examined closely would have a retro, pixel art style to it, a level of detail so small you'd likely need a magnifier to see it properly. If I was to do this for class, I'd probably do a series on a theme. My biggest concern with this idea is the massive ammount of sketching I'd need to do to get it right.

Another thought was an animation where the scenery and backdrop was filmed and have animated characters inserted over top. I've seen a number of videos done in this style with great effect; I'd likely end up with something about 10 minutes long at the end of the term, and it may be accompanied with support material of some kind, which would really be dependant on the nature of the video. I don't have any developed ideas to take advantage of this yet, but I'd be inclined to use sprites.

Anyhow, I'll post more ideas as they arise. This is my project for the weekend, so I'll be deciding promptly. Feedback is always appreciated, of course. :)

Another thing that I've been thinking about in the last week or so is making a prototype card game for my portfolio. Just something simple and interesting to show off more game design. If I can manage something playable and fun, well, that's probably better than a resume for a lot of the places I'd like to work. I think I'll save that for another night, though. After some preliminary discussion with Vinay and Ben, I've got an interesting model to work around.

Anyhow, I'm off to bed now, I guess I should actually post this, lest it be eaten.

Later all,
- Kagirinai
