Appeal to Authority -- Hey, that's me!

Oct 25, 2007 14:30

So I gave a lecture this morning to first year students. It wasn't really any different to me than giving a presentation in front of a class of students my own year, only it was a LOT longer. I went over in time, because the Q&A was doing well, so it was something like 1h45m in length.

Result? Well, unless I was lied to, the results were overwhelmingly positive. Kris, as an outsider to the class and its theory said he thought it was good (It was kind of nice to have someone in the audience I knew. Sort of a reliance on the familiar thing -- Thanks Caveman), and I was given excellent review from both Prof. Leslie Chan (who asked me to speak) and Steve Tracy (A graduated New Media student slash TA), and the discussion made it fairly clear that the students in the room were paying at least some attention.

I really enjoyed it. I certainly wouldn't turn down the opportunity to do it, or something similar, again. Even though talking about video games in such a broad stroke is difficult, I managed. I'd love to do something more specific, like indepth discussion on cinematic game styles, storytelling techniques, procedural generation... so much good material to work with, so much interesting stuff to talk about! :D Who knows. Maybe there'll be more down the line. I hope so.

It's such an awesome feeling, being seen as an authority on a topic you love. Couldn't ask for more to improve a mood. :)

Depending on how today goes, I hope to have some postings about my projects this evening. I've got some rough drafts I'm polishing. Look for stories later tonight. :D
