2D Media Update

So I burned my day away determining, FINALLY, what I'm doing for my 2D Media project. And I did laundry. Hooray me.

This has been a hard one to settle on. It's a little nerve wracking, though, as it's a large scale project I have to do REALLY WELL.

I wanted three things from this project, overall, and I needed two. I wanted it to have surreal imagery, potentially by using photoshop to blend digital painting and macro photography; I wanted it to be presented in a surreal manner, not unlike a hoax or some similar item that is presented under false pretenses; I wanted it to be meaningful and to actually engage the viewer in some way. I NEEDed it to be FEASIBLE, and to PROFESSIONAL.

My first idea was to do Tarot cards based on the mythos of Aberrant Legends. I even wrote out a basic outline as to what the cards would be and how many there would be. Unfortunately this was 54 cards, which while feasible, would have been difficult in the way I wanted to present them. Similarly, I was having a very difficult time determining how to create captivating imagery. This is something I may revisit at a later date.

The second idea I had was to create travel photos for a fictional character in a fictional place. I knew how to do it, and I knew what I'd do, but not what I'd say. The feasibility of this one was a little lower, too, as I'd have to do a lot of set building before I could even start. Since I need something to show October 2nd, this was a bad choice.

The next major idea I had was to create a character, a paranoid investigator type, and have him create case files on a series of increasingly strange occurrences and crimes. This was a refinement of the travel photos idea, but again, the subject matter was difficult to reconcile with meaningful content, and time was an issue.

I then came back to an idea I had a while back for a project I envisioned to score a new camera. I was told in first year that you can apply for grants at the school for art projects, which turns out, isn't exactly true. I was going to use a grant to buy a nice Digital SLR and some lenses, then take thousands of pictures for a concept I called '1000 Words'. The pictures would be printed out and each would have a word written on them, which would form an essay that relates back to the content of the images. Perhaps not the most original idea, but compelling no less, not to mention large scale. Off the top of my head, I realize now that it would have cost some $175 (before tax) to print that many photos, assuming that they were all purchased a half off (at Black's at least).

Anyhow, I revised the idea. I like the idea of a collection of images, each of which has a word on it, forming both an image and an essay. I thought about presenting the writings as words from a character, thus satisfying the Surreal presentation desire I had, but I discarded that in favor of meaningful content -- not that my characters aren't meaningful, but I don't think they would present information as usefully to the viewers as my personal voice.

What about subject matter? Well, that was a hard one. I toyed with the idea of asking a character 'Do you believe in god?' -- Tox, specifically -- and compared what she would have said at various points in her life. But it got me thinking that some of the most interesting material people write is stream of consciousness. So that's what I'll be doing. I'm going to take a few writing prompts, then write until I become tried or totally distracted. I'll scan it over and clip out three sections of 1000 words, and use that as my basis for the work.

As for the execution, here's how it'll go down; I have a 40 x 25 inch sheet. Each 1x1 square will be a 'pixel' and will contain a word. I'll try to iconify the text I'm working from in to a 40 x 25 pixel image, and then blow it up to a whopping 1dpi. Then I'll break apart all the pixels and in each section of colour, there'll be an image, done in three or five tones of that colour so that it all averages out to the origonal colour. This way, when you approach the poster you can read the text, see images exemplifying the text and at a distance, like a pointalist painting, you'll see a mosaic appear of the icon that represents the piece.

I'll try to do them in sets of three, and I'll do as many of them as I have time for. :D Ideally I'd like to do four sets, but that is a lot of work. (Not to mention a LOT of posters!)

So there it is. My 2D Media project. Now to go post the relevant bits to my class blog.

Before Wednesday I'll post the completed Faerie Tale design document for the curious. :) Things are lookin' good!

(Also I'm officially dating again, according to Facebook.)
