First: I was at a Game Development Social last night. It was a panel discussion with a bunch of people who actually work in the non-video game industry. Authors from white-wolf, the guy who created Hero Quest and Ed Greenwood, the writer behind the Forgotten Realms.
It was awesome. It was hilarious and fairly insightful. I very quickly felt like the trip and the cost (which was cheap) was totally worth it. Some of the insight included help on how to freelance, and others like 'Be on time first and good second', which is a terrifying but understandable concept. There's recommendation to submit articles to Dragon and other RP magazines which I think I will be looking in to.
But the cool part was at the end of it, I was chatting to Ed Greenwood and talking about what I could do to get in to the industry -- someone interrupted and asked if I'd like to join in on a gaming session. It was 11, and I couldn't, I had to get to the subway and get home. The hour and a half trip to Scarborough isn't one I enjoy doing. If I lived downtown, I would have been all over it.
And when I said I couldn't stay and why, Mr. Greenwood asked me if I needed a lift! So I got to save a bus ticked and get a drive back to UTSC with a D&D legend. He even said he'd take a look at my portfolio and give it a critique. How cool?! I was excited. It was a great night.
Which leads to next! I'm working on my new portfolio. It's close to ready, though it'll be a little longer. I'm putting this one together to be representative of everything I do. There's going to art work, digital and traditional, writing, both in the terms of articles and fiction, as well as material on game design. I want to get the impression across not that I'm professional, but that I will be soon. The layout it almost done, so it'll only be a little while longer until it's done.
In fact, I'd love it if people could suggest material they think is particularly worth entering in to it, as space will be limited. If you have a favorite picture, story, video, article, or anything of mine, say so and I'll make sure it's in there. :)
That's it for now, though. More to come soon. :D
