Progress on Three Fronts

Jan 16, 2007 12:13

Hail!

I'm sitting in a dull class right now. Dull Class II, in fact. I find it kind of disheartening that this instructor's reviews actually cover more information (more effeciently as well -- these would pass as mediocre lessons, factually) than his origonal lessons did. I bet some people in the class are actually getting something out of this.

He also made us present the exercise from last week, which was unexpected. This was particularly odd for me, since it was a loose HTML exercise, and I elected to do something with a small tinge of artistic merit, rather than the typical comericalist crap that everyone puts out by default. Although I must say, the class on a whole had a good showing. Take a look at mine here. It's a brief bit of poetry with a layout and images to match. Nothing outstanding, but it did make it more fun to do.

All of that aside, I've been a productive child in the last week. I've made key steps forward on three key fronts; Financial, Artistic and social!

Foremost: Financial. No, no money coming in yet, but new progress has been made on loans, so I shouldn't be so strapped this term. Hurrah!

The more important half of that is on a long term front. I've got a handful of contacts now, through various people I know. RELEVANT contacts, including a CEO in an Ottawa animation company who wants to move in to Game Design. Sweet. By tomorrow afternoon I should have a few more people to talk to as well. I might not be in Vancover this summer, but I'm on track to a better job.

On the artistic front, I've managed so far with little difficulty to keep to my drawing-a-day resolution, which is nice. I'm working on a digital painting as well. Slow going, but I'm hopeful for the end result.

I'm also working with foam~! Styrafoam is most certainly one of my favorite materials now. It's easy to work, light, cheap and versatile, then with a little effort, you can make it reasonably durable as well.

I got the foam (plus a little bit of pegboard) to make wargaming terrain. Which is something I've made significant progress on. I now have four 1x2 foot boards, which while not totally assembled yet, are essentially usable for simple gaming terrain. I have materials enough so far for another two boards, but I wanted to just do the four first.

(I actually gridded out a map for the downtown portion of a small riverside city that is an alarming 64 boards large! While I don't intend to make 64 boards of terrain -- where would I keep them? -- I did make them with expansion in mind. if I want to build more boards, I already have a plan. By my estimates though, the 8x16 foot gaming board would be adequet space for an 8 player game of Warmachine, wherein each play runs a 2000 point army. That's a rediculous 16000 point of figgures, and presumbaly 3 or 4 warcaster PER army! Two of whom could be epic!)

With additional foam and supplies, I'm making a myriad of things, but considering my exposure to foam in the last while since halloween, I'm really brain stormin over just what I can make with the stuff. It occured to me today that I lack things like wreck markers for my units, so I may try my hand at that. It's all quite a lot of fun.

This brings me to my most recent progress, as recent as this morning. As the classes run Tuesday mornings are boring enough to drive a man to murder, I chose to spend my focus on the internet, rather than on thoughts of sleep and sharp, heavy objects.

I found a store. TWO stores in fact.
On the far side of downtown is a place called Dueling Grounds, that has a really badass logo, and is easy to get to. (Points must also go to Vinay who found Hairy Tarantula for me as well, which I'd also like to check out.)

Closer to home, and a quick two bus jaunt away, is Gryphon Games. It's about 5 minutes from the Town Center by car, if my estimates are right.

Now, I havn't been to either of these stores yet, but I'm now quite interested in looking, as they both run Warmachine Steamroller Tournaments. (The Privateer Press Prizes by the way are pretty cool. Didja know that the Champion Certificate you get from one of these tourneys can be submitted to Privateer Press to get Foil stat cards for the winners army-list? It's true! I'd love a stack of foil cards. :D)

Now, Dueling Grounds is running a steamroller this week (saturday) and then again in March. I'd go to it, but I don't have time or money to set aside for it. (If I had know a week or two ago, that would be different)

Luckily, the easier to get to Gryphon Games is rumored to be running one the week after. Jubilation! So I'll buy a sub and head out to their store with my army and game away. I feel happier just thinking about it. :D

So yeah, things are pretty good.

Hows everything with all of you?
