Nothing says happy birthday like an ice cream cake from Carvel

Well, I wasn't going to share this with you, but since I have the proof (thanks to photographer Helen), I shall proceed.

Back in spring of 2001, we celebrated our family's March Bdays: My mother (3-15), My father (3-19), and me (3-27), with an icecream cake from Baskin Robbins.

At the time, Kurt and I came up with the following brilliant what-if scenario: I go in and ask them to write on the cake "thanks for last night, love your sister" or something to the extent that would really make the whole cake-ordering experience very uncomfortable.

Well, it's 2005 and we still had not performed this prank. What an opportunity but Kurt's 25th bday (8-8). Helen and I were visiting my family in Massachusetts for the weekend, so it was perfect.

Unfortunately, the follow-through wasn't all that great. Baskin Robbins couldn't prepare the cake on time, so we ended up going to the Bakery department at the Stop& Shop Grocery store. We got a carvel cake out of the freezer case, and asked the middle age lady at the counter to do the dirty deed.

I ask her with a very serious, business-like face: "could you please write on the cake "thanks for last night...."
her, cutting me off "I don't want to know"
Helen: "wait! you haven't heard the best part!"
me (continuing) "....love your sister"
her (a silent expression of wtf)
me "could you please add xoxo at the bottom? and maybe a heart?"
her ( i think now aware that it is a joke) "is this good?"
helen and i "awwwww"
the other middle-aged guy there "it's so touching I could cry"

My mother decides to make an impromptu surprise party for Kurt, with parents of one of Kurt's childhood friends and then also a couple of Kurt's friends from highschool. And so it felt a bit weird to present this cake to my brother amidst them when they didn't know the whole history behind it, but at least Kurt found it amusing :)

Check out the cake-- a beautiful work of art... the primary colors and melted, distorted clown from one of our 5th year bdays hint at childhood--while the newly fresh 2 in front of the 5 and the X0XO hint at something quite scandalous and wrong. Just brilliant.

I am interested in any suggestions you may have for genious cake sayings to try next go-around :)
