Clow made his way down the hallway, having just left a meeting. He was trying not to think about the other meetings he would have to make today, to hopefully conclude some business he’d been putting off far too long. He knew he’d go to bed that night very tired.

From down an adjacent hallway, Clow heard a repetitive ‘thump-thump-thump.’ Deciding to investigate, he turned down that hallway. He immediately located the source of the noise- a scowling, young Touya sitting on a bench, banging his heels on the floor. Holding back a smile, Clow made his way towards his son. Touya saw him and stopped banging his heels, making a token effort to stop scowling.

“Hello, Touya.”

The boy nodded and mumbled something. Clow sat down on the bench next to him.

“May I ask what the matter is?”

“Nothing.”

Clow sat patiently.

“It’s just… Sakura’s off playing with that brat Syaoran,” Touya began, giving a particularly harsh scowl at the name of the archeologist’s son, “and Yuki’s in lessons with the other priests and magicians.”

“And why aren’t you in lessons?”

“Teacher’s sick.”

“Ah. So you don’t have anyone to play with?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you want me to do something with you until Yukito comes?” Clow decided he could probably postpone that business just a bit longer.

Touya looked down. “Nah, you’ve got a lot of stuff to do. I heard you talking at breakfast.”

Clow studied his son for a moment. “What else is wrong, Touya?”

Touya continued to gaze at his now scuffed shoes. “I… What if Yuki likes the priests and magicians more than me? He spends more time with them than with me. I don’t like that. Plus he can talk about magic and stuff with them but I don’t know a lot about that stuff.” Touya scowled again. “It makes me feel weird when I think about it. I get angry.” The boy once again gazed down at his shoes. “But I shouldn’t feel angry about that. He can be friends with anybody he wants to.”

Clow hid another smile. “I understand. Everyone feels like that sometimes, Touya.”

Touya tentatively looked up at Clow. “Really?”

“Yes, really. Everyone does. We don’t like it when our friends seem to not like us very much anymore, or when we think someone we like likes someone else more than us. It’s perfectly natural to feel like that. We just have to be careful that we don’t hurt someone else because of those feelings.”

“Yeah.”

“Besides,” Clow continued, “Yukito always comes over to see you as soon as he can, doesn’t he?”

Touya slowly nodded. “Yeah, he does. We always play together.”

“Well then, I think he must like you a lot, to always come over to spend time with you, especially when he could just stay in the dorm and play with the others.”

Touya nodded again. “Yeah… you’re right, I guess.” Father and son sat for a few minutes in the quiet before Clow spoke again.

“These feelings you get when you aren’t with Yukito- don’t you think they’re the same kind of feelings Sakura gets when she can’t be with Syaoran?”

Touya instinctively scowled once again at Syaoran’s name, but he was clearly considering what his father had said. “I… guess so.” Eventually the scowl left entirely as Touya sat, thinking some more. Touya suddenly looked Clow in the eyes, his childish determination shining through. “I’m going to marry Yuki. That way he can have as many friends as he wants but we’ll still be together and I won’t get mad about it.”

Clow nodded, smiling. “That sounds like a good plan, Touya.”

Touya furrowed his brow again, thinking. “I’ll have to ask Yuki about that. Do you think Yuki’ll want to?”

“I’m sure he will.”

“Good.”
