Well, I just stayed up the entire night working on a pattern to use for my pumpkin. Last year I carved a Kyo pumpkin and it didn't turn out well because I tried for too much detail. This year I'm going to try to do a Hitsugi one, but I'm trying to figure out a way to avoid doing the nose...
It's a bit troublesome and annoying to make your own patter from a picture (at least for me), but it's fun when you try to carve the pattern. I'm sure that there have to be easier methods out there, but I just print off a picture and do my best to recreate it by hand, and from there I mess around with it until it can be carved. For me finding the areas that should be carved out is the hardest. In the case of the nose if you want to carve the face and leave the nose unless you have something to keep it attached to it's going to fall. My brain is sleeping right now so it's difficult to explain but I'm sure it makes sense to anyone who's tried to make a portrait pumpkin before, it's the reason why a lot of people only use half a face, or a heavily shaded picture...but I'm stubborn and won't allow myself to do that.
In other words: I'm an idiot.
But if by some freak chance I manage to get the pattern to work I'll post a pic of it here.
