Police: Mr. Smith, you were held up at gunpoint on the corner of 16th and Locust?
Smith: Yes
Police: Did you struggle with the robber?
Smith: No.
Police: Why not?
Smith: He was armed.
Police: Then you made a conscious decision to comply with his demands rather than to resist?
Smith: Yes.
Police: Did you scream or cry out?
Smith: No, I was afraid.
Police: I see. Have you been mugged before?
Smith: No.
Police: Have you ever given money away?
Smith: Yes, of course-
Police: And you did so willingly?
Smith: What are you trying to say?
Police: Well lets put it like this, Mr. Smith. You’ve given away money in the past, in fact, you have a reputation for being very generous. How do we know you weren’t trying to get this man to take your money by force?
Smith: Listen, I have never wanted-
Police: Never mind. What time did the robbery take place?
Smith: Around 11pm
Police: You were out on the streets at 11pm? Doing what?
Smith: Just walking.
Police: Walking? Don’t you know that it’s dangerous being out on the street that late at night? Weren’t you aware you could have been held up?
Smith: I hadn’t thought about it.
Police: What wearing at the time, Mr Smith?
Smith: Just a suit.
Police: An expensive suit?
Smith: Well- I guess.
Police: In other words Mr. Smith, you were walking around the streets late at night in clothes that practically advertised the fact that you might be a good target for easy money. I mean, if we didn’t know better, Mr. Smith, we might even think you were asking for this to happen, wouldn’t we?
Smith: Look, can’t we talk about the history of the guy who did this to me?
Police: are you trying to accuse him of something?
