Avatar - My Thoughts (Spoilers ahead!)
Yeah, I know it's a tad late to be talking about this movie, and it has been awhile since I've seen it. But, I figure that, by now, most people know pretty much everything about it, as it's gotten to be a household name now that it surpassed Titanic.
Firstly, don't believe the 'hype' about Avatar. By that, I mean that it's gotten strangely popular to hate on the film for it's plot. This arises from the fact that, most people are conditioned to believe that, Special Effects and Story are like the opposing weights on a scale. If you have a lot of one, then the other would have to be sacrificed.
This isn't to say that, its story was a paragon of originality. But, honestly, how many films are that? To be honest, I found the general arc of Avatar to follow more along the lines of classic works. It has been said that it's similar to Dances With Wolves, but there's a few significant differences. Unlike Jake Sully, John Dunbar was not specifically sent to study the Sioux, Naytiri isn't at all the same character Stands With A Fist was, and Avatar is ultimately the story of how the natives are triumphant over the invaders. Whereas Dances With Wolves, in my mind, was a massive, despairing tragedy. Albeit it's set in an authentic, historical frame of events.
To be perfectly honest, I found the whole, literal, physical connection with other lifeforms with a system not unlike Firewire, was quite original in and of itself. Plus, Colonel Quaritch was one of the best villains I've seen in awhile. I'll never forget, what I consider his Crowning Moment of Awesome. Which was when he bailed out of his falling command gunship in an AMP suit, with the thing crashing right behind him.
At any rate, I highly rate this film, I'd not been rendered speechless by a movie since 2001.
