Character name: Yuuta
Fandom: Zombie-Loan
Timeline: During chapter 65, right after he was deleted.
Age: He looks like a young, prepubescent boy, but his real age is unknown, since zombies are physically frozen at the age they died. According to the guidebooks, he's "actually pretty old."
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Every good, well-rounded team has a white mage type in their party. Yuuta is that healer! Unlike the other zombies, whose abilities are offensive ones, Yuuta can heal people using ectoplasm. What exactly ectoplasm is in the series is never directly mentioned, but Yuuta does offhandedly comment that he'll
"need some live spirits to regenerate [dead cells]". With his power, he can completely heal minor wounds, and form bandages to speed up the recovery of more serious ones. One of the only limitations of his power is that he can't heal people who are on the verge of dying.
How would they use their abilities?:
To make money, dammit. -No, really. Because he doesn't kill zombies, he acquires money to pay for his loan by healing the guys who do engage in combat. At first, he'll demand money for his healing services, but the longer he stays in the game, the more he'll lighten up about it, especially if he's being asked to heal someone he's grown attached to.
Appearance:
One of the first things people notice about Yuuta is that it is almost impossible to tell what gender he is. He stands at 155 cm (juuust about 5'0"), and is... extremely androgynous. He enjoys dressing up in punkish and gothic lolita-esque outfits, and has a penchant for cute hats, especially animal-themed ones. As with all zombies, he possesses a jet black ring around his neck, which looks almost like a choker. It's usually not visible to anyone, though, until they happen to possess "Shinigami Eyes" (more on that later).
Background:
Once upon a time, there was a man named Bekkou! Bekkou was a Ferryman, a person charged with keeping the balance of the world in check by running them according to the Akashic Record, where everything that was, is, and will be is written. To do this, Ferrymen must erase "contradictions," occurrances that destroy the balance of life. By erasing contradictions, the Ferrymen accumulated energy that they had to do something with. So, they... created zombies! Because creating entirely new inconsistencies is totally what you do when you're supposed to be erasing them.
To destroy these zombies, Bekkou founded the Zombie-Loan Office. He started offering "loans" to people who had freshly died; he'd keep them alive as zombies, but every month, they'd have to pay Bekkou for their continued existence. Their main source of income? Earning money by defeating "illegal" zombies-the zombies created by the Ferrymen. See, unlike the illegal zombies, who were more or less the kind of zombies you'd find in a horror movie, the legal ones (the ones created by Bekkou) retained their wills and personalities. Technically, the creation of legal zombies was also a "contradiction," but the Ferrymen chose to overlook it, since the illegal zombies were more of an issue.
NOW THAT THAT'S OVER. Enter Chika Akatsuki and Shito Tachibana, two boys who end up being in a huge bus accident. They turn out to be the sole survivors of the crash... only because, soon after the accident, Bekkou offered them another chance at life (or, well, he did to Chika-Shito's situation is a lot more complicated). However, something happened during the revival process; Shito ended up with Chika's right hand and vice versa. This created a "chain of destiny" between the two; were they to be separated for too long, their hands would rot off and that would not be good. However, they gained a power! By switching hands back to their original owners, they could summon weapons to help them hunt down illegal zombies. Cool stuff.
Soon, Chika and Shito get caught up with a girl in their class named Michiru Kita, who possesses "Shinigami Eyes." Her eyes allow her to see rings on people's necks-the darker the ring is, the sooner they'll die. However, the glasses she wears usually nullify her ability, so she can live life somewhat normally. Unfortunately, her glasses get taken when Chika and Shito pass by, and she sees jet black rings on their necks, since they're already dead-but she doesn't know that yet. After Michiru witnesses the two switch hands to kill an illegal zombie, they wonder if they should kill her or not. They decide not to, though, when they realize she can really help them identify other zombies. They then arrange to take her to the Z-Loan office to introduce her to Bekkou.
When the three go to the Z-Loan office together for the first time, Yuuta is there to welcome them! Yuuta is the second legal zombie created by Bekkou. Around the office, Yuuta serves as secretary, treasurer, and tea maker. As Michiru soon finds out, though, Yuuta also specializes in healing, as well as computer and field support. Throughout most of the story, Yuuta is a background character, usually only showing up when the main trio visits the office, or on group outings. One notable moment where he serves a larger purpose is during the Butterfly arc, dealing with the serial killer known only as "the Butterfly." Yuuta starts to do research on the mysterious killer, all while befriending one Reiichirou Shiba, Chika's old best friend from middle school. Eventually, the group finds out that Shiba is indeed the Butterfly...as well as a fellow zombie. However, Shiba was turned into a zombie in a different manner than the Z-Loan zombies
Again, Yuuta chills out during the next few chapters, doing little things like accompanying the group to dinners and a hot springs outing. Eventually, a man named Hakka, an old acquaintance of Bekkou, starts a business known as "A-Loan," a rival business to Z-Loan. Hakka offers a bet to Bekkou: since it'd be pointless to have two loan companies around, whichever office earns 10 million yen killing zombies would get to stay, while the other would go out of business. The two groups quickly go to work, but a short while after the competition begins, both the Z-Loan and A-Loan groups get trapped within the school the Z-Loan kids attend, which has been placed in a different, seemingly inescapable dimension that makes it seem like the school stopped existing. While the groups are trapped in this dimension, Yuuta and the rest of Z-Loan concentrate on the sudden increase in illegal zombie numbers in the outside world. When, after a series of events involving Chika's memories and a fight against people from the ARRC (the people that trapped them within the dimension, who are related to the Ferrymen), the group finally escape the dimension they've been trapped in! Yuuta is waiting in the outside world to greet them, having taken care of the zombie outbreak with the other Z-Loan members. Bekkou pays Hakka 10 million yen for the lives of Z-Loan, A-Loan, Koyomi, and Shimotsuki.
Yuuta is largely absent while Chika and Shito go off to Hong Kong, while Michiru and Koyomi go to Koyomi's birthplace to search for Yomi, whose soul was lost while trying to escape the school. Bekkou and Yuuta eventually show up in Hong Kong just as Lao Ye, Shito's batshit crazy ancestor who was possessing his body at the moment (it's a long story), is about to be defeated. When Shito and Chika ask why they came, Bekkou simply tells them that he's come to collect their dues, all while Yuuta is being creepy and lusting over all the blood and gore.
About a month after their return from Hong Kong, the Z-Loaners find themselves in a rut, as no illegal zombies seem to exist anymore. While the main trio-joined by the group from A-Loan, who ended up joining Z-Loan, as well-are out trying to search for illegal zombies anyway, a group of Ferrymen arrive and literally erase the Z-Loan office from existence, along with everyone inside at the time. Upon the main trio's return to where the office once was, the Ferrymen also erase Michiru; Chika and Shito are saved by Sougiya the undertaker, who specializes in Buddhist spells and talismans and whatnot.
Chika and Shito start questioning why Sougiya wasn't erased, while everyone else was. He tells them that the zombies were deleted according to a list kept by Bekkou-Sougiya was the first legal zombie Bekkou created, when Bekkou used analog methods to keep track of the legal zombies. The second zombie was the one who convinced Bekkou to switch to digital data-that second zombie being none other than Yuuta. Sougiya suggests that Yuuta leaked the list out
Soon enough, a group of Ferrymen arrive and successfully erase Chika, Shito, and Shiba. The three end up trapped in... a video game. No, really. Turns out the video game they ended up in is a "storage place" for temporary data-in Higan, the world of the Ferrymen, everything is made of data. They eventually escape the game and locate the others, who had been reduced to the Higan equivalent of binary. Unnnfortunately, that's about as far as they got before Peach-Pit put the series on hiatus. 8(
Yuuta has not shown up again since his erasure! As such, he'll be arriving at the Thor just after he's been erased.
Personality:
For the most part, Yuuta acts "his age"-or at least, the age he appears to be. He's very cheerful and playful, to the point where it can annoy people. He knows he's being a bother, too, which just seems to inspire him to keep doing it. He also has a habit of giving people nicknames! He even has names for his right (Ken-ken) and left (Kon-kon) hands, and gives them personalities: Ken-ken is shy and quiet, while Kon-kon is abrasive and kind of obnoxious.
He also seems to be good at acting, as he can change his personality in order to get people to give him money! When Michiru first comes by the Z-Loan office, he's seen yelling violently at a debtor, coming up with all kinds of vulgar threats. It only really happens when he's at his job, though; every other time, he's as carefree as normal. However, he also has a sort of...very macabre side to his personality. He's drawn to the sight of blood and pain, to the point where he sometimes calls the wounds he treats "delicious." He reacts in rather the same manner to money-much like Bekkou and Chika-but that's really not as creepy.
Even though it seems like Yuuta's a pretty one-dimensional character, there's stuff going on with him that nobody quite understands, motives that no one knows, especially if the whole "Yuuta sold us all out to the Ferrymen" issue turns out to be true. It could just be that his happy-go-lucky personality is a ruse he puts on to mask his true feelings. One thing about Yuuta that really shows just how little people know about him is that plainly states that he doesn't care about his life, when it comes to a point where even the "legal" zombies working for Z-Loan are going to be erased; at that time, all he talks about is money, with Bekkou noting that he "still sounds carefree like usual."
Have you read up on how the game works?:
The Guide plug-in is the FlamingFerret! People get money by completing missions, doing freelance work, and mooching off people.
1st person sample: (note! this is Yuuta in his RAGHARHG GIVE US MONEY mode on the phone, this is "Ken-ken," and this is "Kon-kon." I've given Yuuta himself more than 100 words of dialog, for reference...!)
HEY, look pal! We've given you TWO MONTHS to pay off this. Where the hell's our money, huh? We're a LOAN company, not a GIVE-OUR-MONEY-AWAY company! No, I don't care if your mom is dying! She's probably better off like that than bumming off you, someone who can't even pay back a loan on time! If you don't pay us back by the end of this week, YOU'RE FINISHED! Don't think you can hide from us either, you ass! We know where you live!
[the phone is SLAMMED down for effect. afterward, a childlike, playful-sounding voice-which sounds just vaguely like the person who was just yelling-comes on.]
Ahaha, it's just like home~! Who would've thought I could land a job I'm already good at in my first week? And for it to have been so specific... it's almost funny how comfortable it is! It was almost made for me! Don't you think so, Ken-ken, Kon-kon?
"It's still pretty scary how we're in space all of a sudden..."
"Shut up, stupid! You gotta enjoy this! How often can you say you've been in space, huh?"
"Waah! Don't do that to meeee, I'm not stupid!"
Hahaha! Play nice, you two~ Anyway! I hope this job pays a lot... who knows how long I'm going to be here, after all! I feel like I should resent whoever brought me here, but hey, someone who's kind enough to give money to me for doing such a simple job is a kindred spirit! I get the feeling I'm really going to enjoy it here. Just thinking of all the money I can make... aaaah, I'm so excited! Ready or not, Thor, here comes Yuuta!
3rd person sample:
So this is how it turned out, huh? Deleted, erased from all existence, and then revived without an explanation on a spaceship. In space! It was...weird. Sure, that sounded a little lame, but Yuuta didn't exactly care either way. He never really lived for anything, after all; he'd been a zombie for so long now that he sometimes found it hard to remember he'd once been human. The only thing he regretted is that he didn't get the chance to appreciate the lovely wounds Chika and Shito must have sustained after his erasure... what a shame, what a shame! Those two always had the best injuries.
But hey, here, he could eventually sign up for a job like that if he kept working. He'd already had it planned out-do as many menial jobs as he could at his current pay level, then maybe start a healing practice aboard the ship once he'd earned enough money. All the wounds he'd get to treat, and all the money he'd make from doing it... it was so enthralling! What was that thing he supposed to do now-work to return the world back to normal? As if! Who cared about that world now? The Ferrymen were dead-set on deleting everything anyway, so what good was it to pay to bring it back? Yuuta had a better plan in mind. He'd finally be able to keep all the money he made to himself, no more having to worry about paying off his loan!
Those were the thoughts running through his head as he slammed down the phone on his latest client. Do some work, chill out, and get a bunch of money. Maybe this new lease on life (he laughed at the pun, the irony of that) would be way more exciting than hunting zombies all the time.
