Frankenstein Meme, Day 20
What fandom broke your heart?
No fandom has broken my heart. There are some stories within my chosen fandoms that have made me cry, but I assume this question has to do with members of the fandom, and not the creators, or the stories that comprise what I love in each fandom.
No? I’m wrong? OK ….
Just in case, I can say that Who has broken my heart numerous times: the Ninth Doctor’s departure. Rose’s departure (I know there are people who really don’t like her, but she was special to me.)
Donna’s fate broke my heart. Hard. And it wasn’t necessary; Rusty indulged in cheap writing to wring our tear ducts dry. He shouldn’t have done that.
Then The Moff did the same with the loss of Amy and Rory. That was just as cheap as Rusty’s Donna move, and with even less decent writing. The actors killed it, saving the episode - which is why I can’t even watch “The Angels Take Manhattan” again.
Clara and Twelve broke my heart a lot. Even though I love Thirteen, I mourn Twelve. God, Capaldi was amazing.
Bill’s death broke my heart, although it was healed just a little by her choice to see the universe with someone who helped her transcend the Master’s evil.
Speaking of the Master, Missy’s death didn’t completely break my heart, but I mourned the loss of potential, the potential to transform into someone decent.
In Classic Who, I recall what a kick in the gut it was to see Adric die. No matter his problems - and they were mostly the kind of problems a brilliant teenager would get into - he was a kid who tried to be a hero. Jamie’s and Zoe’s fate was another gut punch, albeit a little less harsh than Adric’s fate.
I’d say that Peri’s fate could be considered a heartbreaker, but we don’t know which fate turned out to be the real one.
Other fandoms? In the Vorkosiverse, Aral’s death and Cordelia’s grief hurt. I was glad to read "Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen"', because it gave two excellent characters some happiness. The knowledge of what Taura faced was also something I mourned.
In Sapphire and Steel, the roadway cafe kills me every time. That, along with Donna and Bill deserves fixits. All the fixits.
Luckily, there’s nothing in "The Goblin Emperor" that breaks my heart. It’s glorious and filled with love, and if you haven’t read the novel, you should.
As for Guardian? Yeah, the end is textbook heartbreak, which is why I’m reading the original text in hopes of not having to deal with textbook heartbreak.
