Actually, I don't think it has to do with that. His time with RSC is up this month. Tennant started his career on the stage, prior to his TV/Film appearances. I think it is primarily because Russel T. Davies is leaving and the next exec producer/writer wants new a Doctor. Russel hired Tennant, so it's a good time for him to leave.
