We have been watching the new Doctor Who, downloading them each Saturday night as faithful fans. The first episode I watched with friends huddled around a laptop watching it on Youtube. That was unexpected, as we should have been studying for exams, but we gave into temptation. We have watched the first four episodes.
So far I like the series, but I do not love it. I gotta say, I still miss David Tennant as the Doctor. We were spoiled by his amazing ability to put so much life and gusto into the character. I hope that as Matt Smith grows into role I like him more. I don't hate him, far from it. He is not a Colin Baker repeat, he is just not as awesome as David Tennant. Amy I like as a companion, she is curious and not scared to question the Doctor. One thing we observed is that she seems to be one who saves the day and notices things before the Doctor. Maybe that goes along the lines that the Doctor needs a companion… but at times she comes off more observant than the Doctor. Also, her accent keeps changing. She sometimes sounds Scottish and sometimes she sounds English. I do not know if that is deliberate or not.
He is growing on me… I just have to stop thinking what would 10? How would he react, what would he have said?
On a side note, we introduced Classic Who to some friends who had never seen it. We got them to watch The Five Doctors, which was a hoot. They laughed when they saw what the Cyberman, Daleks and Sarah Jane use to look like. I like showing people that episode as it's a quick down and dirty review of who the Doctor was, who his companions were and who his ememies were. It also gives insight to Gallifrey and the Timelords "evil" past. Watching the classic episode reminded me that I do not like the re-mastering they did on the epsisode when they released it on DVD. The special effects that replaced the original effects are worse than the original ones. I mean come on, it was a BBC show in the 80's the original special effects is part of its charm. Why change a good thing? It's like how Lucas kept re-mastering and changing Star Wars. Silly.
