I interviewed for the Buying position on Friday.
*sigh* And it's most likely a no. From me, not from them.
The problem with the Buyer position is that it sounds like a much more interesting job than it really is. You get to go on a couple buying trips a year, which is fun, because you get to see all the fun fun new stuff and decide what you want.
The sucky part is that all you do after the buying is track your shipments, communicate with the buyers, and track sales. And the assistant buyer does all of that, except for the buying trips. So the fun, glamorous, fabulous parts of the job are all basically removed, and it's replaced with the bitchwork.
Mm, no thank you.
I love my job right now. It's not what I want to be doing next year (c'mon, publishing... anyone know a literary agent that goes in for youth fiction with a scifi/fantasy feel?), but I could do it next year without wanting to hurt myself. It's a lot of fun when it's fun (which is at least a couple times a day), it's really satisfying when it's done, and while it can be a pain in my ass, it's still a pretty damn decent gig. I worry that I would be upset that I sold my soul for an extra hundred bucks a month, if I were to take the buying job.
That is, if it gets offered to me.
I gave this some serious thought this weekend, and I'm much happier where I am. My sciatica has disappeared, and I'm pretty decent at what I do. I haven't had many complaints so far. And hell, I like having very little supervision!
