Suitcases. Travel bags. Hat box. *Hat* box! She’s piling it up in my arms, yapping on about possible weather as if she’s booking a flight to Tahiti.
A year ago, I’d have welcomed her on board, desperate not to be on my own again. She couldn’t take it then. I’m not sure I can take it now.
Too many expectations. Too many hopes crushed. Martha and her unrequited feelings. Jack and the team he wouldn’t leave. The Master, refusing regeneration. Astrid, dying to save the day.
All they needed was what I couldn’t give.
All I needed was a mate.
