Because I got them for about 50% off on Cyber Monday, I ordered the most recent WoT books and when they arrived I realized it had been about 5 years since I read The Knife of Dreams and that I really did need to re-read that to refresh my memories ( Read more... )

I have never read Robert Jordan, largely because he first came to my notice when I was working at a bookstore in the late '90s and there were already 7 books in the series...and I had this feeling he wouldn't live to finish it. Since it actually is going to be finished in the near future, I may try it some day. (Though it's a fourteen book story, which rather worries me.)

You certainly make it worth the read. For one thing, I'm not sure there's a heck of a lot of any of that in Epic High Fantasy NOW.

I will warn you that books 8,9,10 are mostly padding and yeah, they pissed me the hell off for that. (Things get back on track with book 11.)

But.

The depth of the world building is epic, and Nynaeve al'Meara kicks ass. Always.

I think books 6 and 7 are already showing the padding, but...

I really do adore this series now that Sanderson has taken over. It is very much a return to the things about Jordan that I originally enjoyed.

Because of the padding, I had to give up on reading the books somewhere around book 7. Instead I moved to the audio books and found that Jordan's prose works excellently when read aloud. This allowed me to sail through the padding, and get all of the cleaning done in my house.

Books 6 & 7 still have enough meat in them to make wading through the padding worthwhile, but Crossroads of Twilight pissed me the hell off.
