Karl's Movietalk: Batman Begins
Everyone pretty much knows the story of Batman: young heir to a billion dollar fortune watches his parents get gunned down in a back alley of Gotham City, and vows to avenge their deaths by becoming a masked crime-stopper and cleaning up the streets. There have been 4 major motion picture Batman movies, two of which were excellent, 2 of which were pretty much crap. So they decided to restart the series, the product of which is Batman Begins. Now I am a huuuuge Tim Burton fan. So the original Batman and Batman Returns hold a special place in my heart. But Batman Begins is leagues better than the latter, and is currently competing in my mind with the original as being the best Batman film ever made. Where Tim Burton's films created a gothic, atmospheric Gotham City, Batman Begins is a dark, violent, gritty version of the Batman mythos. It takes us back to a time before Batman was the established crimefighter he was in past versions. It shows his training in the Himalayas by the League of Shadows, lead by Ras Al' Ghul. It then follows him back to Gotham, and shows us the little details of creating a superhero, such as making a costume, acquiring weapons, building a lair and finding a suitable mode of transportation. It then thrusts us into the schemes of the Scarecrow, as he plots to poison the water supply with mind altering poison. The cast is superb, with such film veterans as Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, and basset hound faced, all over every form of print media Katie Holmes. This is an excellent movie!
