A young woman who has just finished school and has begun to live in the real world is visiting her family. Her younger brother, who is a junior in high school, has been having problems lately.
The parents go out of town, leaving the daughter to watch the brother and make sure nothing happens. She is of the mentality that the parents are too strict and that the brother is a smart kid who knows how to take care of himself, or at least responsibility for his own actions. She's done a fair amount of drugs herself. She has no problem with weed but she doesn't want him doing any cocaine or anything, no ecstacy. Maybe she had a coke problem. Did a couple of things that she regrets.
The little brother has two friends come over. One of them is loud and kind of an asshole. The other one is quiet and thinks the asshole is funny. The little brother seems to think both of them are cool, but he doesn't seem like a partner with either of them.
They're just goofing off, acting strange. The woman is cool though. Figures out that they're smoking weed. Since she's cool she decides to join them.
The conversation is awkward. The woman feels like she's learning things about her brother that she didn't know before. The brother seems resistant to revealing himself.
She talks with the three boys about safety with drugs.
The girl is somewhat miffed by her interactions with the two boys. Decides to let her brother have his night with them, goes off to bed.
She wakes up in the morning. The boys are gone. Left a mess. Little brother's car is outside. His bedroom door is shut. She goes for a jog. The cold wind and overcast sky... No one around. World is empty. Nothing is wrong. Nothing seems wrong at all.
Her little brother doesn't respond when she knocks on his door. She opens it. Blood. No body. One clue -- one solitary clue -- a portal to a strange world -- a doorway. Something that asshole did... The asshole... Something the quiet kid said... Something strange and cryptic...
The act climax is going to be her course of action after this... Who does she call? Where does she go from here? Does she call her mom and dad? I don't think she's going to have some kind of Risky Business thing... Something bad happened to her little brother. Something FUCKED UP.
It's weird because I feel like people should try drugs, even though there are risks. Risks are good sometimes. The irony of it all is that if you don't take risks you never learn anything. The message shouldn't be that drugs are bad. Responsibility... Her responsibility is to her brother and family.
I kind of want to show that the brother can take care of himself, or that he's learning how to... The message of them learning together that the world is a many splendored thing as well as treacherous is appealing... I don't know if its ironic or not... Maybe this is an unavoidable thing... Will it have a tragic ending? I don't know...
Maybe she never finds the brother. Maybe she finds something else.
What if I change everything... make it a weird different kind of interesting.
It's not an older sister, it's a father. The brother is actually a girl, kind of a suburban punkster vampire whatever... The parents are divorced. The father sees the girl regularly but the mother doesn't want him to have anything to do with him, or maybe the father is kind of meek, incoherent, clueless, but still on that cool end where he can smoke weed with his daughter and her two friends. The mother left the father because she wanted more, maybe... but I still see the mother as being fairly overprotective of the girl. I think the girl likes her dad because he lets her get away with things like that. Then there's some odd sexual tension with him and his daughter's friends. Should be obvious but not explicit... It's implied and everyone will be thinking it anyways...
Anyways... time to get back to real work...
