Feature in Three Months
Conventions in filmmaking have changed. We are at a cycle in cinema where evolution allows opportunity to the independent filmmaker. Digital is what is going to allow me to create my first feature cinema. That is, I am jumping into my dream fully. I have wanted to be a filmmaker, now I am making it happen. Here is what I have in mind.
The stages of making cinema are pretty much unchanged. Pre-production, Production and Post Production. That part of the conventional process will be applied to my project. Plenty has been written in print and online about this method of telling cinematic story, so I wont elaborate here. What I will do is place a challenge on this process. A deadline to be meet strictly. The reason is motivation. What is the difference between me and a working filmmaker? Working filmmaker is making film. My conclusion then is to make a deadline and meet it. My 75 minute feature will be made and ready to watch in three months. That is a month for each phase of production.
Lots has been said about how you can get all this great digital equipment and make great video with it. True enough prices are cheap and that makes it accessible. Cost then is another barrier lost along the way. It will cost you something, but it is achievable. The tools you need are here for you to use. That is the opportunity I spoke of.
Networking is one of those great things you can use the web for. Groups are all around us. Filmmakers and Actors are networking everywhere. Because filmmaking is a group effort, with a few exceptions, this challenge works with networking. Finding friends, actors, crew and location through the use of networking. Online or offline is the same here.
It comes down to making cinema. I am convinced that real barriers have fallen and now is the greatest time to do this. In my three months I will note the whole process and report on what results. You will get the good and the bad as it occurs. Some of my friends have already sent me encouragement, I thank them. What I can say for sure is this will be the training and experience that gives my dream reality.
