Of all the mass-media productions to date, I don't believe I've ever actually been embarrassed for the sake of a movie quite so much as I am now for New Moon. It's amusing. It's hilarious. It's freaking awful, and it makes me cringe to think about anyone being involved with making it. Lol.
The book annoyed me a lot in many ways, but I've read worse. I've seen worse movies, too - ones I liked less, ones with poorer acting, but this one is just... It combines just about every bad aspect possible. I think they chose the director (and cast and everything else) because they thought he'd (and they'd) stick completely to the book and not change it at all. He (and they!) probably did so, which is why the movie is so entirely /bad/. You can't translate a film directly into a movie. Not ever. Especially not one that's half mental-speech, thoughts, and long silences. Especially not the long silences.
The soundtrack bothers me, too. As do the slow-motion bits, of which there are plenty. Too many. Far too many, in fact.
When I make a movie (cue plural: when I make movies!) I will ensure that I make sure that when one character says "I love you" - a parent, say - the other will respond in kind. Same with 'goodbye' on a telephone. There are too many films that use a character's silence to speak about that character's inner turmoil, when in reality the silence is just plain rude, and the response of 'I love you, too' or 'goodbye' is more an automatic response than anything else.
On the other hand, I do like Dakota Fanning. Very much so, in fact. And I like the actor who plays Lucious in Underworld, as well. So basically, the Volturi are fun and the rest of the movie is dumb.
Huzzah.
