Getting ready for School

Aug 07, 2004 17:15

Though several parts of last week's orientation were tedious, I'm glad we had it. I feel so much more comfortable and aware of what I have to do. And getting to meet other teachers at my school and in band in other schools was cool too. I don't feel so isolated anymore, and have really started to feel comfortable at MJH.

However, I don't know jack shit about the other school. Never got in touch with the new principal. You'd think she'd be interested in getting in touch with me, though, don't you? But there's been no effort by those people to contact me AT ALL. Guess that tells me about where music lies on the priority list.

Also, I have never been to a school with such a large special ed program. (I'm talking about MJH again.) I mean, WOW, I didn't know such things existed. There's sinks and washers and dryers and ovens and stuff in the classroom, because what these kids learn (and these are the severe and profound special ed kids) is daily life skills, in addition to reading and writing at basic levels. Wow, that is so practical--that's what these kids really need to know, too. That just amazed me.

My lastest project idea was to take all the old certificates and pictures from MJH and frame them up. I have found certificates from various festivals that have just been eaten to pieces by roaches or mice or something. And that pisses me off, because some kids back in the day worked really hard to get that rating and a bunch of no-caring directors let it get eaten, or wet or torn or whatever. So I'm trying to restore what I can and hang it around the room. These damn past directors tick me off... I can't wait to have the time to get everything exactly how I want it. That's the nice thing about being on my own over there--it's all me. Don't have to share--it's just me.

Anyhoo, off to get to some framing and preparing for next week. Kids come on Friday the 13th. Hope that's not a sign :o)
