Papa's Obituary, or Why Can't Americans Write proper English?

Apr 20, 2009 07:56

Lesson learned: someone please proofread my mother's writing; if ANYONE can make sense of the survivors, I applaud you.

Maybe I'm still very raw about Papa's death and need to vent it out on something. But seriously, my mother has no concept on grammar and how to put together lists in sentence structure. She remembered my cousin Sarah kept her name but forgot that I kept mine; I'm not sure that my cousin Tonya's son's name is Chris Chauncey, and if it is, it means her brother Chauncey was left out of the obituary (not to mention she spelled Tonya's name wrong and Miya's middle name is Leeann, not Miya and Leeann); after listing Uncle Lele's children, she didn't follow the sentence structure so that you don't know the relationships and connections between anyone. Also, Tonya and Mike, Matt and Crystal, and Deanna and Rick are life partners.

Something like this shouldn't really upset me as much as it does. I think I need something to really vent about. Granted, this is nowhere near as upset as I was for Great Gram's obituary -- which DID at least get a proofread before it made it to the paper, but it's still grating that proper grammar is no longer considered useful.

Glenn Leroy Clark
ALBION -- Glenn Leroy Clark of Albion passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at MaineGeneral Medical Center's Thayer Unit.

He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Summerfield, New Brunswick, the son of the late John D. and Catherine (Malcolm) Clark.

He came to Maine with his family in 1938 and resided in Albion. He worked at the Ranson P. Kelley Farm at Nye's Corner as a herdsman. Around 1945 Glenn's long and close relationship with Frank Lee and Lee Bros. began. He worked for Frank until he retired in 1983. He operated almost any piece of heavy equipment that Frank had. His favorite was a John Deere 690 B backhoe, as well as a TD 25 bulldozer. Glenn did most of the groundwork for all his children's homes.

After retirement Glenn was always outside raking, planting and working in his garden. He and Vivian took bus trips with George and Hilda. What he enjoyed most was having his family and his big gray cat around him.

He was predeceased by a son, Leland N. Clark; brothers Ralph and Carlton Green and George and John Clark; and sisters in-law Evelyn and Hilda Clark and Maddie and Louise Green.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian. He is also survived by their children's families: daugther-in-law Tami and her children, Violet and Tim Giroux, and their children, Danielle and Justin Brow and Britni and Emilee Sue; John and Michelle Clark, and their children, Ben and Anna; Joy and Chris Davis and their daughter, Paige; Tanya and Mike Carroll and their children, Miya and Leeann, and Chris Chauncey; a son, Graydon and Kayan Clark and family, Sarah Clark and Jeremy Shute, Deanna Clark and Rick Hathaway, Matthew Clark, and Crystal Pomroy; a daughter, Pammy, and Ray Gilbert and their children, Holly and Jeff Joler, and Sierra and Savannah; Chris and Aimée Gilbert and Trafton, Raylee, Brian, Amanda and Zoey Gilbert; and Amy and Brian Vigue and Jennifer and André Fontaine and Olivia. Additional survivors include brothers Leslie Clark and his wife, Carol Clark, of Albion, and Mavor Clark of Albion.
