goodness, this is so so true. I can empathise a tiny bit; I'm the only girl, and I surprise my parents a lot, I think, by not necessarily being the girliest of girls. Your lj entry also makes me think that being female is particularly gendered (although it probably is for men; I just don't have that experience); would people ask the same questions if you were having a boy? It's so strange. The expectations we put on children because of their sex is very artificial and you're right (and awesome, but you knew that :P) to let your daughter pick what she wants, be it Barbies or pick up trucks.

"It really came to a head for me a few years ago when copilot and I were planning our wedding and I didn't have colors and themes and expectations and all of the things that everyone kept asking me about. Basically, I just wanted to have everyone I loved come and have a big party with us and dance a whole fucking lot."

THIS times a million. Ridiculously frou frou weddings look cool for about 30 seconds, and then it's just a pain in the arse. Weddings should be full of fun and merriment and the people you love, not stressign over what colour the tablecloths will be :(

Also, whatever the explanation is, Hobo is such a cute nickname <3

That's a really good point about things possibly being even more gendered when one is a girl -- I wonder if there would be such questions and etc...

Hee, thank you! I need to remember to write up the explanation -- it's not actually that interesting, but I'm glad it's caught on as a nickname. I wanted to have one for her while she was in utero.
