all that stuff - that 'how to be a girl checklist' feeling- god, i know that.
there's so much i just don't GET. make-up, as in 'i can't leave the house without it'. nylons, again, as in 'i don't feel feminine without them'.
and this theme thing. gah, my kids were born in '71 and '73, and the theme was 'someplace to put the dirty diapers' and 'somewhere safe and comfy for the babies to sleep' and 'somewhere comfy and cozy for mommie to read stories' and 'someplace to lie down on the floor and play with things' and 'somewhere to put everything up neatly so the floor can be swept and mopped so it's not dusty' and 'some way to let light in during the day and make the room cozy and dark at night' and 'some way to have fresh air & or heat as needed without letting in flies or keeping out fresh air'- and if there were random hand-made Kanga and Roo and embroidered pillow-cases from the second hand and base-ball striped pjs around, then that's what there was.
The themes were 'hi, so glad you're here' and 'let me read you a story!' and 'here, want to get down and play?' and 'ooh, what's that?' and those were fine, they were plenty, they were enough. They worked.
"themes" is a commercialization of instinct and intuition, not a 'how to be a girl' thing. Hobo picked you and Co-pilot for a reason- because she knows you don't trivialize her.
It's so weird, because when I think about it logically, I know all of this. But yet, in the face of things, when someone asks, "and what's your theme?" and then I look at them blankly, and then their returning look, just throws me off a bit. I think I need to come up with a better response, one that will be polite and respectful, but will also let me feel like I'm showing what I'm trying to say, which is: "don't pigeonhole my baby, please. She's going to be her own person."
