rambling thoughts on Merlin, s2 (episodes 3-4)
The Nightmare Begins
Loved this episode, too. I'm not sure I can quite explain it, but there's this new bond building between Merlin and Morgana and I like seeing it. As well, I am all for people finding a place for themselves, finding a place where they don't feel so alone. I can't imagine what it was like for Morgana, confronting a power inside oneself that she has heard people speak against all her life. How scary.
I also can't help but see this as a build up for future episodes. It makes me wonder: will Morgana be the first one to find out that Merlin also has magic?
I have hopes that there will be some sort of magical comeuppance for Uther later on, that magic will confront him, save him, even, and he'll have to confront his prejudices.
Though, now that I think about it, I'll bet any sort of brush with magic, Uther would find a way to spin it so that magic was in a poor light. So, maybe not. But maybe others will start to see it for what it is, and not such a bad thing.
omg, and that little scene between Arthur and Merlin at the end...
Arthur: stop trying to get all up with Morgana
Merlin: dude, seriously? You have no idea how much I want to jump your hot bones right now.
Arthur: take it from someone who knows women...
Merlin: ahh, is James Blake around, then?
Arthur: stop making jokes, this is serious.
Merlin: and you're seriously hot, you hunky piece of man candy. Dude, not that I'm complaining, but you can't seem to take your hand off me while you're talking. Not complaining, here, believe me, but it's rather obvious. Even to me.
Lancelot and Guinevere
Arthur: What did you do? I said distract them, not knock them out!
Merlin: There's just no pleasing you sometimes...
Arthur: That's not what you said last night...
Oh, wait. Maybe I added the last bit myself.
I loved, loved how happy go lucky and funny Merlin was in this episode. He reminded me of why I'd liked the first season so much -- he's powerful and bumbling and so clever. So funny.
And Colin Morgan really is so perfect for this -- he's adorable and misfitty looking, but also really beautiful, so he can pull off the funny and still be so incredibly earnest.
This episode, in spite of all of the love angst, was almost light hearted to me. Merlin went along, fixing things and making lovely little humorous statements, and just being all around this lovely guy. And I really loved how it was so obvious that he and Arthur were going to go after Gwen. There was no question to it. They're all so close and care about each other -- the class differential is a rather tedious obstacle, isn't it.
And those FREAKY Supersized Ratburn McEatYourFace? Ick. I kept waiting for this conversation to happen:
Merlin: But, Arthur?? What about the R.O.U.S's?
Arthur: Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist.
But THEY DO!
Lancelot = yum. And Gwen & Lancelot are adorable together (seriously, could Angel Coulby be any more beautiful??) but the whole Lancelot going away because of some perceived duty or whatever, even AFTER she told him that her feelings will never wane, and he STILL leaves. I mean, I know that the fact that Arthur has feelings for her must have played a large role in that, but still... enough with the men always deciding and not ever deigning to talk to the women about it. *cracks whip*
All in all, though, lots of fun. And Bradley James should smile more. He gets these lovely lines around his eyes and they make me all wobbly in the knees.
