Situation is well described
here. Short, Fedora 9 refuses to install to the laptop, but LiveCD is loading with the r8169 module refusing to work. By the way, I had success with the Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD - it loaded well and allowed me to install without problems.
The solution
Step 1. Reduce the Windows partition (or delete it at all if you wish) and reboot
Step 2. During the boot press F2 and go to BIOS. Disable built-in ethernet adapter. Save and quit
Step 3. Boot from Fedora 9 LiveCD. Install from it. Note: I have used LiveCD, and my approach worked. Might be, normal install from DVD is also possible but I have not tried
Step 4. Use another computer (or Vista, but in this case do not forget to enable built-in ethernet) to go to any mirror, and download from Updates latest iwl4965-firmware package (in my case that was iwl4965-firmware-228.57.2.21-1.noarch.rpm) and latest kernel package (in my case kernel-2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686.rpm). Write these packages to some place from where you will be able to get them from Fedora.
Step 5. Go into Fedora again. Open terminal window, login as superuser and do something like the following:
- rpm -U iwl4965-firmware-228.57.2.21-1.noarch.rpm
- rpm -i kernel-2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686.rpm
Now reboot and enjoy Fedora in full !
