A Slumdog Evening

The Golden Globes last night went as expected, meaning that Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire came out on top with four awards, winning for Best Score, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Whenever this nominee's name got mentioned, it received a noticeably louder applause. With its rapidly increasing popularity, feel-good spirit, and international appeal, does this make Slumdog Millionaire a shoo-in for the Oscars? I'm sensing a sweep.

There were still a few surprises throughout the evening, though, as Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona beat out the highly-acclaimed Happy-Go-Lucky for Best Comedy or Musical. Mickey Rourke swooped in at the last minute to snatch away Sean Penn's Best Actor win, which means Rourke really must've delivered one hell of a performance. Kate Winslet had a big night, as well, with two wins for her roles in both The Reader and Revolutionary Road.

Heath Ledger was granted another standing ovation for his surefire win, Sally Hawkins was shaking in tears during her acceptance speech, and Collin Farrell's turn in In Bruges earned him a surprise win. WALL-E rightfully walked away with Best Animated Feature and Israel's Waltz with Bashir yet again took Best Foreign Film.
