After the exciting ride on the T, we made our way towards the Avalon in Boston Massachusetts. If you’ve been to Boston you know that Fenway Park is directly across the street from the Avalon, and just so happens that evening that there was a Red Sox game as well. Seeing the crowd and energy from both the Red Sox fans and the Alkaline Trio fans would get anyone pumped. Being an Alkaline Trio fan for 6 years now, this would be my fourth time seeing them perform. To be totally honest the last 2 times I saw them live I wasn’t too impressed. Let’s hope this time would be better.
The opening band Against Me! Put on a good show, but would have been better if they stuck to their smaller club norm. Seeing Against Me! At a smaller venue is a much different experience, then seeing them at the Avalon. Crowd participation is usually expected, but because of the size and security it was prohibited. The set was about an hour and during that crowd’s favorites like Pints of Guinness Make You Strong and Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious were played.
Alkaline Trio came on after a 20 minute wait. The set started with a few tracks from Goddamnit and mixed into a set list of old and new songs. The first 45 minutes consisted of songs like Clavicle, Little Needle, and Private eye. The energy in the crowd was already high from Against Me!, but seemed to get even more intense during Trio’s set. Right in the middle of the show the crowd needed a break, so a few acoustic songs were in order. After request of front man Matt Skiba, a sea of lighters was in the air through out most of the acoustic set. After the short break from the crazy fans, it was time to get the energy up again. They ended their two and a half hour set with songs like Settle for Satin, my personal favorite Armageddon, Radio, Tuck Me in, and they even performed a cover of the Misfits. At the end the balanced mixture of sweaty mid-teen boys and adults over the age of 21 made their way out onto the streets of good old Boston. I have to say this show was the best Alkaline Trio show I’ve seen in a while, and I was really surprised that they played so much older material.
