The expression "kicking them when they're down" comes to mind for this particular flick. Overall, though, I can see why it's a classic movie.

I think my favorite scene is the crew gathered around the depth gauge, hoping and waiting for a little arrow to move. No fancy special effects, just a bunch of guys staring at a prop, but the desperation of the scene comes across really well. The reception with the freighter captain is another great scene, since it's so wonderfully awkward.

It's interesting to watch the movie simply from the standpoint that we know these guys are a bunch of Nazis, and that historically we can say they deserved it and all that. Even so, I as a viewer still wanted them to survive.
