"You made me WALK."

So for anyone wondering about yesterday's post (yes, both of you) here is some semblance of an explanation for it is the first part of the Amecon 2008 report!

Check out my scrapbook for pictures of Friday's events

1. "You made me WALK."

So Ash wasn't too impressed when I told him we were walking to Havant station, what with it being a rather warm day and the bags being heavy. Fortunately I was able to placate him with the promise of freezing aircon on the train (which turned out to be less freezing than I had imagined). One hour of South Park in teeny-tiny-eye-strain-o-vision later and it was time to battle the Underground... with Ash almost getting floored at the first hurdle when his gate pass wouldn't let him in.

What should have been an infinitely more comfortable second leg of the journey was taken down a notch when we found that due to an idiot on an earlier train, we were now jammed in with twice as many passengers. Seat reservations for the win! Though, having to keep my suitcase on the table due to there being no luggage rack space at all precluded the possibility of conversation with the people opposite or for that matter talking at all. Still, at least it was only one stop (and 70 minutes).

No random police searches this year (thank you, deity du jour) so we were out of the station in record time to meet (other) Ash and Dale. Though we were unaware of it at the time, we had just formed that which would strike fear into the hearts of DVD producers and the BBFC... Go! Team Retard!

This year was slightly different for us accomodation-wise as we were staying at the Holiday Inn Express, Walker's Stadium (that's where Leicester City play don'cha know), and I, in a moment of extremely uncharacteristic preparation, had brought a map. Easy, I thought. We'll be there in no time.

"No time" was redefined several times over the course of the next... hour... as we attempted to find the place. My careful use of Google Maps had in fact led me to... de Montfort University's brand-new student accomodation.

Hmm.

Well if they will build it in exactly the same style as the hotel...

As it turned out we weren't too far from our actual destination. When they say "Holiday Inn Walker's Stadium", they mean it - scarcely 50 yards between the two. Stuff dumped in room, back to the university. Why there has to be a hill in the way I really don't know. Sould be a law against that, though it would mean we'd have physics on our side when returning drunk to the hotel.

Opening ceremony was pretty much as it was last time along with the introduction of the guests (Kari Wahlgren, Akemi Solloway and J-Rock band GOTHIKA) and the usual announcement to the effect of "don't be a dick".

With that out of the way it was time for the first of our events, the Name That Tune quiz, and the first outing of Go! Team Retard! Tensions were high when there was a half-ton of Pocky at stake - we gave a good account of ourselves coming 4th out of around 14 teams.

Wrapping up the night and part of the morning was the AMV disco - anime footage set to the best anthems, what more could one ask for?
