執事喫茶 Swallowtail (Butler Café Swallowtail) Butler Ranks and Who-is-who
I'll be writing about the ranks, what they mean or meant in ancient times and I'll tell you about some of the butlers I know and have their names and pictures. Although I could figure out more names via google translate, I won't write them down unless sure, because there are too many readings for Kanji. If you go, then try and write down the butler names right away. Y ou can then copy this entry into google and look up which name kaji the butler has, if you want. Either way it would be great if you would share their names with me for this archive!
The ranking list is taken from Swallowtail's HOMEPAGE. I took the version from 2013/08/29 so it might be out of date by the time you view it If you want just the name Kanji go to Swallowtail's BLOG On the right side should be the "List of Butlers" which are also serving as entry tags.
Description: “Responsible for all purchasing, hiring, firing and paying the servant staff. He would not be considered a servant but a professional man like a lawyer. Fifty to 100 pounds ($5,500-$11,000) per year.”
I only saw them as second instance at the door as the ones welcoming you and then also picking you up when your time is out + taking care of your locker (more details on what's happening in the café will be in the next post)
Sign of rank: Silver butterfly pin with chain to a white stoned pin
Description: I assume same as of House Steward, just that they are lower in rank. Nowadays Second Steward seems to refer more to higher ranked servants working on ships
Sign of rank: Silver butterfly pin with chain to a red stoned pin (yet for whatever reason I didn’t see it on Iori-san yet. Maybe he was juts promoted recently and his pin is not yet ready? Actually there is one recent pic (2013/08) but it has no colours *lol* So I can’t tell it the stone is indeed red)
“There were always several holders of the office, who were invariably gentlemen and almost invariably peers, often important ones, as the regular access to the monarch which the role brought was the most valuable commodity of the courtier.[…]
The duties of the office involved waiting on the king when he ate in private, helping him to dress, guarding the bedchamber and water closet, and providing companionship.[…]”
I’m surprised to find such rank in a butler’s café! But I figured out the men at the door might have this rank. Not that I’m sure!
Deskription: Butler is in the category `upper staff´.
“The highest ranking official servant. Responsible for running the house. Forty to 60 pounds ($4,300-$6,400) per year. He also received considerable "gratuity" money from venders selling goods to maintain the house. In smaller estates the butler assumed the house steward's responsibilities.”
The butlers usually seem to be the second instance at the door! They are not the doorman but the ones taking your coat and introducing you to your Second Steward/(First)Footman
Sign of rank: Silver butterfly pin with chain to a black stoned pin
Description: Footmen are considered ´lower Staff´.
“The first footman was the designation given to the highest ranking servant of this class in a given household. The first footman would serve as deputy butler and act as butler in the latter's absence."
Sign of rank: Silver butterfly pin with chain to a blue stoned pin
Description: "In a larger household, various footmen might be assigned specific duties (for which there might be a traditional sequence), such as the silver specialist. Usually the footmen performed a range of duties which included serving meals, opening and closing doors, carrying heavy items, or moving furniture for the housemaid to clean behind. The footmen might also double as valets, especially for visiting guests.”
