Ralphie is a female Bison. Yeah, buffaloes are extinct, but we still try to pretend she is one. But I wanted to see a wild buffalo. I thought that would have been cool.
We definitely wanted to climb Mt. Rushmore but it had snowed there on Thursday, so there was still some snow on the ground and all of the trails were closed. Plus we were with his sister and his nephews, and they probably didn't want to stick around while we climbed it.
American "buffalo" are bison. The population was down under a thousand around 1900, but it's much larger now. There is also a population of wood bison in Canada, and there are about three thousand European bison (called wisent).
You can see bison (ranched, not wild) off of I-25 on the way up to Cheyenne. I've seen wild ones in Yellowstone seveal times.
Real buffalo are Old World oxen, like the Cape buffalo.
