i was there on friday. at westroads mall.
and we were laughing and arguing about the true color of "christmas red"
and now i'm imagining if i would have been saying "no, THIS is christmas red!" ...and all of the sudden hearing up to 40 gun shots.
and i'm imagining another time we were there.. when my friend came skipping out of the dressing room of von maur in a sweater and excitedly asked, "should i get it??" ...and then all of the sudden seeing someone dropping to the ground.
what would i have even done??
this is westroads. not crossroads. not southridge. and definitely not north omaha.
this is the "nice" mall.
the first numbers came out that 2 were possibly dead, and possibly 5 or more wounded. i went to talk to my spanish professor, and when i came back, the number was 9 dead (including the shooter) and 5 wounded. 2 of those wounded are in critical condition. 3 are not.
they brought victims to the creighton med center. that building is about a block away from me. it is basically my view when i walk down the mall on campus. and they brought people there that were shot. in a mall that i was at on friday.
too close.
but its not even about me... we had a vigil at church... and the only name of the deceased that we knew besides the shooter was a guy that goes to st. johns. he was standing next to his wife when he was sniped from the floor above him. his wife saw him die. would that not be the most painful thing ever?? watching your husband bleed to death because he just got sniped while you were christmas shopping??
i'd been saying "i just need to make it through tuesday... i just need to make it through tuesday then im done." this really puts things in perspective. because they wont make it through tuesday. literally.
pray for those families. it has got to be unbelievably hard. what a christmas present.
the shooter was 18. he had just gotten fired from mcdonalds.
i'm going back to westroads after break. if you fear westroads, where can't you fear? no fear.
i need to make myself care about finals again. i haven't all day.
